Chad Lieber recently talked about the rise of autonomous robots that have a license to kill. He said, "This is a frightening and grim prospect, but it is virtually guaranteed to happen."
There are already several levels of autonomy in several weapons systems today, including patriot and cruise missiles. An example is the Aegis Combat System in naval ships, which has an autonomous mode where it uses powerful radars and computers to guide and keep track of weapons and to destroy enemy targets. Others are Samsung Techwin's remote-operated sentry bot (currently being used in the Korean DMZ) and the U.S. packbot/REDOWL system (which can be modified to take out snipers unmanned).
According to Chad Ian, even if the U.S. and its allies stopped using drones, the Pandora's Box has already opened and there is no going back. Although drones are remotely piloted aircrafts, a confluence of events has led to the perfect conditions for rapid spread of worldwide autonomous robotic weapons. 
Chad Lieber explained that although there have been calls to halt the development of these machine-soldiers, military leaders are warming up to the idea of using robots in the place of human life. These machines are expected to exceed human capacities across several cognitive and physical domains and they are likely to develop as part of an arms' race. 
Chad Ian stated that this could be in conflict with the famous "Three Laws of Robotics" in Isaac Asimov's short story "Runaround" which has been used in most sci-fi films and books. These include robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction allow a human being to come to harm. The second and third laws are, a robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law, and a robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

New Orleans, LA - Wilting lilies that mimic paper thin skin, red fading petals reminiscent of fiery lipstick - the floral arrangements featured in Les Schmidt's new photographs appear almost human in their range of expression. Which is exactly what the New Orleans photographer intended with his Dorothy Jean series.
"These images were originally inspired by the passing of my mother two years ago," Schmidt explained. "In her later years she dried and pressed flowers as a hobby. When she died, I took home a single flower from an arrangement, then pressed and photographed it to preserve her memory." 
The project grew to encompass images that embody various phases and qualities of human life, with many of the works representing people close to the artist. Schmidt collected and arranged these bouquets, maintaining them for sometimes months at a time. 
Schmidt said, "I found that the flowers' colors, shapes, and stages of decay strongly suggested the personalities or physical conditions of people I knew and cared for."
"This series is also about rituals, and how we depend on them for comfort. The process of selecting and 'nurturing' these flowers became very ceremonial, akin to caring for a loved one." 
Les Schmidt's photography career has spanned over 15 years, ranging in subject from austere coastal landscapes, to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, to the precisely controlled tabletop shots of "Dorothy Jean." Included in many notable collections, his work has been shown at venues across the country and exhibited for an extended period in the Warehouse Arts District of New Orleans.
During this solo exhibition, Schmidt's work will occupy the entire display area of the Guy Lyman Fine Art gallery. "We're thrilled to have these striking large-scale images on our walls," said Guy Lyman. "We invite visitors to view these poignant works and consider them in the context of their own lives."
The photographs will be presented during Art for Art's Sake on Saturday, October 3rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Guy Lyman Fine Art, 3645 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA, 70115. Refreshments will be served.

"The dream-rendering machine is a huge step in the research into internal brain imagery schemes. Essentially, it opens a window to enable everyone to view the movies in our minds. The possibilities are both terrifying and exciting, in almost equal measure," he noted. 
Mr. Chad Lieberman described the machines technology, stating that it has been applied to three members of the research team, primarily because it required one to spend hours inside a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine.
For the study, he explained, the subjects had been shown two different classes of movie trailers while the fMRI captured the blood flow in their brains through the visual cortex. The readings were then input into a computer program, from where they were reconstructed as three-dimensional known as volumetric pixels (voxels).
This enabled effective decoding of the brain signals produced as a result of moving images, to connect information about motion and shape from the movie trailers to particular brain responses. The computer learned more and more about how the visual activity fed to the brain and shown on the screen could be matched to brain activity.
