 Ahvan for the Organizers

 Time: 2 AM

Place: Student Mess, IIM Indore Campus

People: 25 tired but attentive bodies, sipping tea and engaged in a heated debate.

Ram Nivas: “I’m telling you dude! We’d want that accident insurance policy rather than the health insurance scheme. The rural populace are more prone to accidents in farms and industries. And anyway, they might be covered for health under various government policies”.

Krishna Chaitanya: “The fact that we had no claims in this policy in the last years is reason enough to move away from the accident scheme to a more holistic health insurance scheme which could be beneficial to all members of their families. Plus, we have adequate government subsidy for a health based insurance scheme!”

That was an excerpt from a heated debate for deciding on the flavour of insurance scheme for Samanvay, a social event under Ahvan 2011. Arguments went on in the group, with 25 people vociferously pitching in with fresh ideas and ways to make health care affordable to people in 12 villages in and around Indore.

At IIM Indore, Ahvan is the biggest festival of the year. Ahvan means evocation and is a collective inspired call for action in a decisive, inspirational, socially uplifting and sustainable spirit. It signifies a call to the nation, for awakening, commitment, collaboration and action. The talent extravaganza is a congregation of the sharpest minds from both academic and corporate world. The event will integrate all disciplines of management to provide a platform to learn through veritable competition. Some of the flagship events such as Ashwamedha, Kalpavriksha, Gordian knot and Chanakya, Klueless have over the years become cult events with a dedicated following of their own.

So what is it like being a part of Ahvan?  This article is an effort to understand what goes into the making of the grandest management event in central India.

The race to be a part of the Ahvan team starts as soon as the fresher’s enter the institute in August. The process is one of rigour and only the best are chosen for the coveted positions.

“We had a focussed intent of selecting the best students with a stream of fresh ideas and passion to implement them. We had to have people who could lead and perform under crunch situations and are able to handle and entertain huge audiences” says Bhavin Parmar, Coordinator-Ahvan 2011.

The Publicity Team handles the entire communications process of Ahvan with other b-schools. The team draws its strength from a huge and well-cultivated network and strong relationships forged with other colleges over the years.

The Events team is credited with people who are natural crowd pullers. Their antics keep the audience enthralled and entertained and they also help guide the participants to the locations of their respective events.

The Hospitality Team takes care of providing the best in class treatment to guests and participants attending the mega-event. They leave no stone unturned when it comes to comfort and ease of travel of all the speakers, judges and participants.

The Logistics Team in any college festival executes all the months of planning — they are the people on the ground. These are always the most cheerful, patient and helpful lot in the batch. We’ve chosen a highly efficient and systematic bunch of guys to handle the logistics.

And then there is the Corporate Communication Team, who is the face of Ahvan to the Corporates. These are the guys who ensure that Team Ahvan is a well-oiled machine. Right from the day the team is announced, this group gets working through alumni networks, sponsors from previous years and drawing benefits from IIM Indore’s relationship with the industry. To call the level of accountability and responsibility this team handles phenomenal would be to understate it.

 Ahvan for the Participants:

Some of the flagship events such as Ashwamedha, Kalpavriksha, Gordian Knot and Chanakya tests the mettle of the contestants in different domains of management.  Ashwamedha for example is mentored by Dr. Vijay Menon. If SocialEntrepreneurshi
p
is your forte, look no further than Kalpavriksha.  Gordian’s Knot tests one’s ability to rise to the challenge and looks for people who can out-think, out-perform and out-last. Chanakya which witnessed participation from 300 students from the top 30 business schools is a consulting event.

Apart from offering events which are intellectually stimulating and enticing, Ahvan also offers participants a chance to improve the lives of the disadvantaged groups of the society and work towards solutions which are socially sustainable.

It is with this idea that socially responsible events like Kalpavriksha, My Campaign and many such other initiatives were designed by team Ahavan.

Through Ahvan, one will get the chance to fully exploit one's skills and to bring about the transformation that one thinks is currently needed. Ahvan is the opportunity to be able to identify problems and transform them into opportunities. Ahvan is about inspirational motivation to identify what needs to be done and to provide the impetus for all to move forward. Ahvan is about the intellectual stimulation through which we questions underlying assumptions and build our own new world. Ahvan is also about individual consideration, it is our revolution for something bigger and better.
