Previous Australia cricket captain and fanciful supporter Richie Benaud has passed on at 84 years old.

Benaud, whose witty one-liners from the analysis box reverberated a long ways past Australia's shores, said a year ago he was being dealt with for skin disease.

"After Don Bradman, there has been no Australian player more popular than Richie Benaud,"

"Benaud remained at the highest point of the amusement all through his rich life, first as a record-breaking leg-spinner and skipper, and afterward as cricket's most popular - and most mimicked - telecaster."

A veteran of 64 Test matches, Benaud was drafted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.

While numerous viewed his voice as the soundtrack to an Australian summer, Benaud was similarly worshipped by the cricketing open on the opposite side of the world where he spent over four decades with the BBC taking the diversion into a huge number of British front rooms.
