'Thundersnow' hits Britain - Manchester Airport Runways Shut




Two major airplane terminals in Manchester Airport were deadened and many schools the nation over shut as Britain was hit by "thundersnow".

Forecasters say the UK will be hit by a week of snow and solidifying temperatures as the nation's "yo-yo" climate proceeds.

The North will be most exceedingly bad hit with "thundersnow storms" striking, while snowfalls of up to 15cm are anticipated today.

There are reasons for alarm the plunging temperatures could imperil the soundness of the elderly and powerless and reason travel disturbance as the snow showers are required to hit amid this current morning's hurry hour.

Manchester air terminal, the UK's third busiest, was compelled to close for a few hours to permit snowplow to clear snow from runways. East Midlands air terminal additionally endured interruption.

The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared" snow warning covering large swathes of Britain, from Liverpool Bay across to the Humber to the western side of the Welsh mountains.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: "We have got snow falling in a number of areas in the North and West, including thunderstorms.

"There is thundersnow to the north of Manchester - these are normal thunderstorms but with snow rather than rain. The lightning on the white flakes is quite dramatic.
