History on Dalal St, Sensex zooms 515 pts

The Sensex opened 25 points lower at 9271. The index touched a low of 9262, and soon rebounded into the positive zone.

Unabated buying in the market saw the index zoom to a high of 9849. The index finally settled at 9811 - up 5.5% (515 points) - to record its biggest ever single-day gain in history.

While the Mid-cap index surged 5.7% to 4191, the Small-cap index soared 4.7% to 5060.

The Oil & Gas index zoomed 8.8% to 4688, and the Metal index surged 6.8% to 7474. The Auto, FMCG and Healthcare indices gained over 5% each at 4464, 1754 and 3034, respectively.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,466 stocks traded, 1,595 advanced, 830 declined and 41 were unchanged today.


INDEX MOVERS...

Reliance Energy zoomed 15% to Rs 434. Grasim surged 13.5% to Rs 1,776.

Reliance soared 11.7% to Rs 922. HDFC and ITC added 9% each to Rs 1,208 and Rs 161, respectively.

NTPC rallied 8.5% to Rs 109. BHEL surged over 8% to Rs 1,874.

ACC and Larsen & Tourbo gained 7.5% each at Rs 754 and Rs 2,023, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 594 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 95 crore), SBI (Rs 94.30 crore), Hindustan Zinc (Rs 92.46 crore) and Infosys (Rs 87.55 crore).

Reliance also led the volume chart with trades of around 66.55 lakh shares followed by G V Films (54.39 lakh), IFCI (52.22 lakh), Himachal Futuristic (39.52 lakh) and Reliance Communication Ventures (38.44 lakh).
