Jindal Steel announces mega project in WB


MIDNAPUR: The foundation stone for Jindal Steel’s mega project named Bengal Steel Limited worth Rs 35000 crore will be carried out by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on January 30 in West Midnapur.

District Magistrate N S Nigam said, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the proposed project of Jindal Steel on January 30 at Salboni in West Midnapur.

The company has acquired around 4000 acres of land, mostly government land for the project, the company’s Vice President Rajesh Gupta said. There was no objection from any political party or farmers while acquiring the private land, he added.

Gupta said the first phase of the project would be completed by January 11, 2008.

This might be the biggest investment in the state in this out going year.

Direct employment in the first phase of the project would be about 3,000, while indirectly it would be about 6,000. Rs 2.7 lakh were given to the cultivators for each acre of land, Gupta said.

Apart from giving compensation to each farmer, equivalent amount of shares have been distributed to them as free gift, the Vice President added.

Moreover, one person in each land losers’ family was assured a place in this project, he added.
