NEW DELHI : With over one million foreign tourists and persons of Indian origin (PIOs) expected to visit the country over the next three months, the dengue and chickengunya scare in various parts of the country has come at the worst time for the travel and tourism industry. For the time being the industry is lying low, hoping that things are brought under control over the next two-three days.

“Declaring an epidemic would bring India under the scanner of world media, leading to travel advisories from various countries. This will definitely have an adverse impact on tourist arrivals,” said head-honcho of an in-bound travel company. Some informal lobbying has been on from the industry to avoid declaration of an epidemic.

The first nine months of the calendar year have seen over three million foreign tourists visit the country, a jump of over 13% over last year. In September the country registered a 9.3% jump in arrivals, as compared to same time last year. However, the rate of growth of tourist arrivals has come down from around 11% in September last year.

Despite some queries of concern, there has not been any cancellations or postponement of bookings by tourists. Some tour operators have advised their guests visiting the country to use mosquito repellents and cover body parts when it India. At the same time industry is also working on contingency plan to counter any adverse impact of the dengue fall out.

“We will have to come out with special messages to drive home the point that it is only a local issue and that only some parts of the country are affected,” said a senior travel industry executive.
