What is a syllable?
The smallest unit of sound production is called a syllable.This means the minimum number of distinct sounds that one can hear when a word is pronounced is called a syllable.
eg. pronounce the word car : how many distinct sounds can you hear? One.Car
Say the word bucket aloud:how many distinct sounds can you hear?Two. Buck -et
Try one more word: eccentric : 3 sounds :ec-cent-ric; impromptu: 3 sounds:im-prom-tu
When words have only one distinct sound they are called a monosyllables,two sounds : disyllables,three sounds : trisyllables and more than 3 are known as polysyllable words.
