The difference between older and elder….

Older and elder are adjectives used to indicate the age factor. They are used in the comparative degree.Older always takes a ‘than’ while elder takes a ‘to’ eg. She is older than me./She is elder to me.

Secondly, older can be used to describe both animate and inanimate objects but elder can be used to describe only human beings.

eg. It is wrong to say : Kutub Minar is elder to Taj Mahal ; it should be : Kutub Minar is older than Taj Mahal.

One more interesting!!

How the world famous Harvard university got its name?

Initially called ‘New college’ it was rechristened to Harvard after a man named John Harvard who donated 400 of his books to the library.

He also donated $ 779 which was half of his estate to assure the continuation of the college.

What is a syllable?

The smallest unit of sound production is called a syllable. This means the minimum number of distinct sounds that one can hear when a word is pronounced is called a syllable.

eg. pronounce the word car : how many distinct sounds can you hear? One.Car

Say the word bucket aloud:how many distinct sounds can you hear? Two. Buck -et

Try one more word: eccentric : 3 sounds :ec-cent-ric; impromptu: 3 sounds:im-prom-tu

When words have only one distinct sound they are called a monosyllables, two sounds : disyllables, three sounds : trisyllables and more than 3 are known as polysyllable words.

Is it kilometre or kilometres?

Any noun that can be physically counted will always have a plural form.Any noun which cannot be physically counted will never have a plural form.

eg. Can we count milk? No. We can measure milk. So is there a word like milks? No.

Can books be counted? Yes.So the word books.

Can we count a kilometre? No.We can measure a kilometre? So,will there be a word like kilometres? No.

Hence all scientific units never take a plural form. You see there is logic to every rule in English. It might so happen that we might not know the rational for a few rules or may be that we have never tried to find one.

Cheers. (you have any query simple post it….)
