Haryana govt to set up five community radio stations - August 8th, 2011

The Haryana government will set up five community radio stations at Ambala, Jind, Rohtak, Rewari and Sonepat during the current financial year under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme to provide agriculture related information to farmers. While stating this here today, a spokesman of the Agriculture Department said that SMS service for weather forecast has already been started by CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar for the benefit of the farmers. During the year 2011-12, a sum of Rs 20 crore would be spent under ATMA scheme for organising training programmes for the farmers, tour to other states, demonstration plots, kissan melas, farmers' seminars and farmer-scientist talks, he added. In addition, awards amounting to Rs 66.95 lakh would be given to the farmers under the scheme. The state government is implementing national agricultural development scheme with the assistance of the Central government in order to ensure holistic development of agriculture in the state. A sum of Rs 200 crore would be spent under the scheme during the current financial year. Another scheme, namely National Food Security Mission' has also been implemented in the state with the assistance of the Central government for increasing the production of foodgrains in the state. A sum of about Rs 26 crore has been provided under the scheme in the current financial year. The spokesman said the soil fertility had decreased due to intensive agriculture and other reasons, which have adversely affected the production and the state government has taken a number of steps to improve soil fertility. The use of green manure is being promoted and for this, the seeds of 'dhancha' were being provided to the farmers at 90 per cent subsidy. So far about 3.50 lakh hectares of land has been covered under green manure. He further said 50 per cent subsidy was being provided on Gypsum for reclamation of alkaline land. Also, soil health cards were being provided to the farmers free of cost after testing the soil of their fields. So far about 10.50 lakh such cards have been distributed. As many as 32 soil testing laboratories are working in the state and five more such laboratories are proposed to be set up at Shahbad, Gannaur, Hisar, Loharu and Dabwali during the year.
