LEAN is one of the basics of quality management/improvement principles applied in the manufacturing sector. It is considered to be a change management methodology that has received a wide range of attention for enormous improvements that it has generated. LEAN ideally targets to remove all the waste within in organization (man/material/NVA).

Here is a document that talks about how this philosophy has crossed from the manufacturing sector and is now very successfully being applied in the IT sector as well
