SWOT ANALYSIS ON Yahoo : Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) is an American public corporation with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, (in Silicon Valley), that provides services via the Internet worldwide. The company is perhaps best known for its web portal, search engine (Yahoo! Search), Yahoo! Directory, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, advertising, online mapping (Yahoo! Maps), video sharing (Yahoo! Video), and social media websites and services.

Yahoo! was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994 and was incorporated on March 1, 1995. On January 13, 2009, Yahoo! appointed Carol Bartz, former executive chairperson of Autodesk, as its new chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors.[3]




Strengths
  • A relatively more established brand than other competitors.
  • Survived (so far) attacks from Google.
  • Strong brand recognition.
  • Flickr and other side businesses (Geocities, domain seller, etc)
  • Partnerships with MLB, VISA and NFL.

    * Yahoo! is ranked 5th in visitors among video sites. Google's YouTube is ranked 1st.
    * Yahoo! image search has been declining 3% per year.
    * Google search results generate twice as much revenue as Yahoo!.
    * Advertising revenues are falling due to Google and other competitors in the market.
    * Lower operating margins compared to the industry standard

    Opportunities

    * Internet video advertising spending expected to increase by 82% to $410 million by 2006
    * Yahoo! Inc has purchased Flickr.
    * Broadband expansion.
    * Yahoo! has a strong and talented employee base.
    * Yahoo! Has penetrated markets that are still untouched by competitors.

    Threats

    * Google commands about 50% of all online searches and Yahoo! has only 24% according to Neilsen/NetRating.
    * Consumer attitudes towards online advertising may become more negative.
    * Increasing strength of competitors.
    * Social websites such as MySpace and Facebook are now breaking into the online advertising market.
    * Google is surpassing Yahoo! in revenues.
