INTRODUCTION TO ZANDU: -

Incorporated in 1919 in Bombay, Zandu Pharmaceuticals Works (ZPWL), well known for its ayurvedic products, went public in1920. In 1930, the company added allopathic medicines to its product line. By 1960, the Zandu group had nearly 1200 products to its credit. In the same year, the management withdrew from the allopathic segment and concentrated only on ayurvedic medicines. The company's product range includes well-known ayurvedic products under the Zandu brand. It has entered into a joint venture with Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation for a vegetable plant-extraction project to manufacture glycyrrhiza extract. It has a strong R&D set-up in which around Rs 3 cr have been invested to introduce new formulations, upgrade existing formulations and standardize ayurvedic products.

US FDA has accepted the application for an investigational new drug for Parkinson Diseases, HP-200 and it expects to start clinical trials in American hospitals. Also, the new manufacturing unit at Masat has gone into






operations fully. In response to invitation number of shareholders visited Masat factory in Jan. 2000 and they appreciated the same. The Company plans to concentrate on its core business strengths and further modernize its marketing activity with a greater customer focus and enhanced competitive edge. The Company plans to introduce new products in some of the therapeutic segments to fulfill the medico marketing needs.

Zandu, a household name, is one of the leading players in the over-the-counter ayurvedic healthcare segment with products including the popular Zandu balm, general fitness medicine Zandu Kesari Jivan, Zandu Chyavanprash and digestive tonic Zandu Pancharishta. In the personal care segment, the major product is hair tonic Alma Lio. Jivan is the market leader of ayurvedic healthcare industry. Zandu also has a wide range of ethical ayurvedic formulations for malaria, diabetes, skin problems, arthritis, liver problems & diabetes.
