Rolled Products North America

Aleris’s Rolled Products North America (RPNA) segment produces rolled products for a wide variety of applications, including building and construction, distribution, transportation and other uses in consumer durables general industrial segments.

Recycling and Specification Alloys Americas

Aleris’s Recycling and Specification Alloy Americas (RSAA) segment includes aluminum melting, processing and recycling activities, as well as its specification alloys manufacturing business. The segment’s specification alloy operations combine various aluminum scrap types with hardeners and other additives to produce alloys and chemical compositions with specific properties (including increased strength, formability and wear resistance) as specified by customers for their particular applications.

Aleris Rolled Products North America

Aleris Rolled Products is proud to provide quality products and services to customers throughout North America. As part of its complete portfolio of offerings for a diverse range of customers, the Company manufactures rolled products both through the continuous-casting process as well as via the direct-chill rolling ingot casting process for more precisely engineered higher-end applications. Our large rolling mills in Lewisport, Kentucky, and Newport, Ohio, begin the process by turning both prime and recycled aluminum into some of the highest-quality aluminum coil and reroll in our industry. This coil can be rolled to gauge and sent directly to our customers in a mill finish, or further processed by slitting, embossing, or coating within our mill.

Our mills can also provide reroll to our downstream operations in Clayton, New Jersey, and Buckhannon, West Virginia. There, the metal is further processed by rolling to gauge, slitting, and applying a specialty coating for some customers. Other key Aleris plants include our Ashville, Ohio, plant that paints and fabricates products sold under the ALSCO brand name, and our Roxboro, North Carolina, paint facility.

Aluminum Recycling

Aleris’ aluminum recycling operations have become a recycling leader in the Americas through its emphasis on superior technology, product quality, customer service, and through the expansion of existing plants and the acquisition of others. This business currently operates 19 US-based facilities in eight states. (Click here to view plant locations and capabilities)

We offer a wide range of metal recycling services and specification-alloy products made to order. The recycling facilities are able to process both primary and secondary scrap aluminum, giving us a great degree of flexibility to respond to your needs and industry trends.

Industries served:

Extrusion
Can sheet
Transportation
Construction
Steel

Scrap Processing

Aluminum that is recycled by Aleris includes many types of post-consumer and industrial scrap, new scrap from the manufacturing of cans and other products, and dross which is skim from the aluminum melting process. Aleris is able to sort, crush, shred, clean, and melt the scrap, then deliver it to metal customers in ingot, sow, or molten form.

Materials being processed:

Dross. Aluminum dross, one of the principal materials recycled by Aleris, forms on the top of material in reverberatory furnaces during the melting process.
New Scrap. This new scrap is generated from the manufacture of auto wheels, engine blocks and heads, can stock, extrusions, building materials, and other types of aluminum scrap.
Old Scrap. Old scrap such as used beverage cans (UBCs), vehicles, building components, other types of industrial and consumer scrap.

Milling

The Aleris milling operations recycle black dross and saltcake through proprietary dry and wet milling processes to separate the components of the materials, thereby reducing the overall volume of waste material produced and returning a portion of them to re-usable products, including aluminum and various mineral oxides.

Melting

Aleris operates both reverberatory and rotary furnaces. Solid scrap aluminum is converted into a liquid form during the melting process. Throughout the melting process, additional alloying elements can be added to achieve a specified chemistry required for various end use needs. The molten metal can be cast into various shapes such as ingot, RSI, or Deox. It can even be transported to customers in a molten state for direct charge to their casting equipment.

Manufacturers needing consistently processed recycled aluminum material rely on Aleris to supply them with the needed material. Aleris offers a tolling fee to accept, inspect, shred, separate, de-lacquer, and melt aluminum owned by its customers. After the melting process is completed, the aluminum is cast and delivered to the customer. Products can be delivered to customers in the following forms:

Molten
Ingot form
Sow form
Deox cone

Casting Process

The molten aluminum from the melting process is poured into a mold allowing it to solidify into particular shapes:

Low-profile sow
Several sizes of ingot
2-way sows
4-way sows
Deox cones

Aluminum Deoxidizers

Aleris produces a full range of aluminum deoxidizers for use in iron and steel production. All grades are produced to conform to ASTM Specification B-37-96 and meet the steel industry standards. Aluminum deoxidizers are available in a wide variety of shapes including:

Briquettes
Cones
Pyramids
Shot
Shreds
All products are provided in a variety of packaging styles to meet your unique requirements:

Boxes
Bundles
Bags
Super sacks
Truckloads

Specification Alloys

Do you have specific alloy needs? Our specification alloy operations can combine various aluminum scrap types with hardeners and other additives to produce alloys and chemical compositions as specified by you for your particular applications.

Specification alloy customers generate scrap or purchase scrap, then have it delivered directly to one of the six Aleris specification alloy plants located in the US, Canada, or Mexico. After being inspected for quality and degree of compliance within receiving specifications, the material is processed, melted, and returned to the customer. Aleris also acquires materials from the open market to produce specification alloy products that we then sell back to the open market.

Melting

Aleris operates both reverberatory and rotary furnaces. Various alloys and grades of scrap are melted into a furnace in an attempt to meet certain chemistry requirements to adhere to the alloy specification needed for casting.

Casting

Aleris has highly qualified, knowledgeable employees who are experienced with the entire casting operation. Once the specifications are received by the customer and integrated into our casting operations, the scrap is melted and the molten aluminum alloy is poured into a mold allowing it to solidify into special shapes:

Low-profile sow
Several sizes of ingot
2-way sows
4-way sows
Specification alloy industries served:

Automotive
Small engine
Appliances
Electrical and consumer products
