Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) (from ALuminum Company Of America) is the world's third largest producer of aluminum, behind Rio Tinto Alcan and Rusal.[2] From its operational headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Alcoa conducts operations in 31 countries. Alcoa is a world leader in the production and management of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum, and alumina combined, through its active and growing participation in all major aspects of the industry: technology, mining, refining, smelting, fabricating, and recycling. Aluminum and alumina represent more than three-fourths of Alcoa’s revenue. Non-aluminum products include precision castings and aerospace and industrial fasteners. Alcoa’s products are used worldwide in aircraft, automobiles, commercial transportation, packaging, building and construction, oil and gas, defense, and industrial applications.
In May 2007 Alcoa made a $27 billion hostile takeover bid for Alcan, a former subsidiary, aiming to unite the two companies and form the world's largest aluminum producer. The takeover bid was withdrawn after Alcan announced a friendly takeover by Rio Tinto in July 2007.
Among Alcoa's other businesses are fastening systems, building products (Kawneer) and Howmet Castings.[3] The sale of the packaging unit was announced on December 21, 2007[4] and closed in the first quarter of 2008.

Alcoa is the world's leading alumina supplier–the only global supplier with smelter and chemical grade aluminas available from multiple sources around the world. Alcoa aluminas exceed expectations for quality and performance while providing the basic materials you need to improve your products and processes.

From increased fuel economy and reduced carbon emissions to crash protection without compromise and enhanced driving performance, Alcoa aluminium builds a better car, truck or trailer or. All other factors equal, lighter cars accelerate faster, stop faster, and have better handling – that’s why many top performance cars are all-aluminium.

Aluminium's light-weight saves fuel costs. For every 10% reduction in vehicle weight, there is a 5-7% fuel savings. Alcoa aluminium provides even greater benefits to hybrid vehicles with advanced powertrains, improving fuel economy by 13.5% compared to an equivalent hybrid vehicle comprised of steel.

Alcoa aluminium is infinitely recyclable and contributes to significant reductions in CO2 emissions. Using more aluminium reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with global warming.

Aluminium has always offered unique advantages for designing the shape, appearance and finish of modern buildings. And, it offers an even more important advantage for today: sustainability. With the demand for green building solutions increasing in all corners of the world, Alcoa has developed new aluminium components and designs that enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and help achieve green building standards.

Alcoa aluminium helps drive innovation of high performance, ultra thermal cladding solutions by preserving the advantages of high-performance glass. We offer highly reflective surface finishes that allow for efficient light management and lower energy consumption – keeping buildings cool in hot climates. Our advanced facade solutions help reduce CO2 emissions from buildings and reduce energy consumption. The alloys we use are weather-proof, corrosion-resistant and immune to harmful effects of UV rays, ensuring optimal performance over a very long time. All in all, good building designs – using aluminium - offer enhanced productivity and comfort by delivering natural ventilation, and direct access to daylight and outdoor views for building occupants.

95% of aluminium in buildings is recycled today, and aluminium building products can be repeatedly recycled into similar products with no loss of quality. Alcoa aluminium's unmatched recyclability gives architects the ability to design with cradle-to-cradle lifecycles in mind, to help achieve green building standards.
