To focus on a particular core business or to diversify into multiple businesses is a decision most firms have to take at some stage in the life cycle of the firms. The market conditions, institutional framework and nature of competition have a significant role in influencing firms switching from one strategy to another. In order to say what would be the best strategy to pursue in an emerging market, we have done an empirical analysis of performance of various firms and see if there is a relation between success and extent of diversification. In this paper, we have attempted to do this exercise on top Indian firms and try to determine if being focused would be the right thing to do. Finally, a few case studies are looked at and some of the critical success factors for success with focused strategies are understood....
