In today’s economy, students need to be proactive with their job search strategies. It is no longer the case that you will attend a couple of career fairs, drop some resumes with prospective employers, and expect to wait it out until you hear back for that really great company you have been desperately wanting to work for. Now, know this doesn’t mean that you have to become discouraged or anxious about finding a job after graduation, it just means you have to get smart. Keeping up with the reality of the job market will be a step forward in preparing yourself for your job hunt. If you know that it is more difficult now then it was before to get a job, then you also know that you have to find more creative strategies in your search.

Also, don’t be passive in your job search, get out there and show them what you got. This is where we want to go a step ahead, and start thinking of cold calling. Cold calling is a great strategy to finding jobs that you might otherwise not hear about. It is also a way of opening up your opportunities to landing your dream job. Just like networking can present you with job opportunities that are otherwise unknown, cold calling can do the same. This strategy is also a great way of showing a prospective employer that you are serious and motivated about getting the job.

If you hadn’t heard about cold calling before, cold calling is when you take the initiative to call a company you might be interested in working for. There is no need to know anyone in the company to conduct a cold call, but if you do know someone it can be especially helpful. A cold call is used to see if there are any openings in the company and to see if you can get an interview for those openings. In the world of business, companies use cold calls to approach prospective clients or customers. It is all about selling the product. In your job search, cold calls are a way for you to market your product (yourself) to prospective companies (a future employer).

I do understand that cold calling can also be scary because it brings with it a possibility of rejection. However, a few rejections shouldn’t stop you from an even greater number of possibilities. Think about it this way, even if the company you contact doesn’t have openings, you could still asked to get the name of someone else in the company who might be willing to give you an informational interview. This will allow you to expand your network, and learn more about the industry you are interested in.

Now, before using cold calling as a strategy for finding a job, you need to make sure you are prepared.

1.You want to research the company as much as possible in order to know what is going on with them, what are their values, is it a right fit for you, does it say that they are hiring at the moment, etc.

2.You want to have your resume and cover letter ready so that you have something to send before you proceed to making your call.

3.You need to know who to contact. It is probably not the best idea to go straight for the CEO of the company, as this will not get you very far. You need to make sure to contact the person who can give you a job, in this case a hiring manager.

4.Before contacting the hiring manager, you want to get their name and email address in order to send in your resume and cover letter. You will probably get this information from a receptionist. Make sure to be polite and to get the right spelling for the hiring managers name,

5.Lastly, you should prepare what you will be talking about when you call. Writing your conversation down beforehand can help relieve some nerves and keep you on track in your conversation. At the end, even if you don’t get an interview, remember to write a thank you letter; you never know if a position will become open in the future. A thank you letter will also show that you are courteous, and it will give you a chance to run your name by the employer’s desk one more time.

Remember always mind your manners, and never get discouraged. In these tough economic times, you need to be as proactive as possible when it comes to landing a job. Happy calling!:SugarwareZ-290:
