Mission and Vision
Throughout its history, Hitotsubashi University has aspired to develop business leaders with an international perspective. Our forefathers used the phrase "Captains of Industry" to describe the role our alumni should play in society. Today, Hitotsubashi University faculty members are recognized throughout the world for their contributions in the fields of commerce and management, economics, law, and the social sciences.
The mission of Hitotsubashi ICS is to build on this tradition. Our goal is to contribute to society by developing business leaders capable of initiating, implementing, and managing innovation (i.e., creating "Captains of Innovation" for the 21st century), and by disseminating research originating in Japan on a global scale.
Our vision is derived from the university name, "Hitotsubashi," which literally translates as "one bridge." Our vision is thus to serve as "the bridge" between two seemingly divergent forces; to be more specific, to be "the bridge" between the East and the West, between practice and theory, between the Old Economy and the New Economy, and between the "haves" and "have-nots." By pursuing these ends simultaneously, we hope to gain the "Best of Two Worlds."
At Hitotsubashi ICS, we are mindful that there is much to be learned from the past, but at the same time, we are acutely aware of our need to add value in this crowded field. Offering the same "package" as business programs in the West runs counter to our focus on strategy. Strategy is about choosing to be different from others. Therefore, we have made a choice to be drastically different from our predecessors by thinking "out-of-box," pursuing the cutting edge, and breaking the rules of the game. The distinctive ICS logo reflects this choice: It is a human face integrated into a billowing flag, signifying our innovative and unconventional graduates leading the cutting-edge of knowledge in the global economy.

At Hitotsubashi ICS, our challenge lies in seeking two seemingly opposing goals. On the one hand, we are trying to capitalize on our past, taking advantage of the long-held traditions at Hitotsubashi University in creating Captains of Industry. On the other hand, we are trying to break away from the past by offering innovative, unconventional, and frame-breaking business programs. Why Choose ICS?
• At Hitotsubashi ICS, we offer students a world-class curriculum with a unique mix of value. According to a survey of Japanese business leaders by The Nikkei Weekly in 2004, Hitotsubashi ICS is the No. 1 MBA school in Japan in terms of "international orientation," and the second-ranked MBA school in Japan overall.
• Hitotsubashi ICS is the first full-time MBA program in a Japanese national university to be taught entirely in English. In addition, because Hitotsubashi University is a national university corporation, the cost of earning an MBA at ICS is relatively low. Even if a student elects to take the full two years to complete the program, the total amount necessary for tuition and matriculation is about 1,300,000 yen (approximately US$12,000), which is a fraction of what other leading business schools charge.
• Hitotsubashi ICS offers students unparalleled flexibility in designing their own curriculum. Applicants now have a choice of options that will allow them to graduate in one year or two years (with the possibility of early graduation).
• Each year's entering class at Hitotsubashi ICS is kept intentionally small, with fewer than 60 students. The student/faculty ratio is close to 3:1, a ratio that no other leading business school in the world can match. A special feature of academic life at ICS is our seminar system, which fosters close, enduring relationships between students and faculty. Early in their studies, all incoming ICS students select a seminar advisor, who traditionally becomes "a mentor for life."
• One of the unique features of Hitotsubashi ICS faculty is their real-world work experience in business. About 60% of our full-time faculty members have worked for multinational firms, including Boston Consulting Group, First Boston, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Guaranty, McKinsey & Company, A. T. Kearney, Fuji Electric, McCann Erickson-Hakuhodo, Mitsubishi Electric, and Sumitomo Bank. In addition, two-thirds of our full-time faculty members have earned their MBAs and have extensive teaching experience at leading U.S. business schools, such as the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford Business School, the Anderson School at UCLA, the University of Virginia's Darden School, and Columbia University.
• The student body at Hitotsubashi ICS is multicultural and international in nature. Among current students, 28% are from Japan and 72% are from other countries: 43% from Asia, 6% from North America, 13% from Europe, and 10% from other parts of the world.
• Hitotsubashi ICS has strong partnerships with nine partner schools in the USA, the UK, Europe, and Asia, including Babson College, London Business School, The Darden School of Business Administration (University of Virginia), The Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management (Claremont Graduate University), UCLA Anderson School of Management, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, HEC School of Management in Paris, Seoul National University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Every year, ICS students compete for exchange placements at these schools.
• Hitotsubashi ICS has developed long-term intellectual alliances with many leading companies in Japan, including Daiwa Securities Group, Toyota, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Fuji Xerox, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Andersen Consulting, Accenture, L.L.Bean, Amway Japan, Ad-comm, Cornes, and Trend Micro.
• The Career Placement Office at Hitotsubashi ICS is one of the most successful in Japan. More than 90% of our graduates have been placed with the company of their choice (other graduates include company-sponsored and YLP scholarship students). Our two-year students have interned with companies such as Boston Consulting Group, McCann Erickson, Bain & Company Japan Inc., Lehman Brothers, Johnson & Johnson, BP Japan, GE Group, GSK, Nomura Research Institute, Daiwa SMBC, Nissan, and Honda Motors, among others.
• Our program culminates with Knowledge Week, when the entire faculty spends one week with the students, reflecting on what the students learned in the program and integrating what they learned with their future mission and vision.
• Our campus is located in Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda-ku, only two blocks from the Imperial Palace, within easy walking distance of the Otemachi business district of central Tokyo, and in proximity to Tokyo Station. This desirable location close to the central business district allows students to visit companies and enables prominent business leaders to visit Hitotsubashi ICS as guest speakers.
• We are located in the renowned National Center of Sciences, an "intelligent" building which is equipped with the latest IT facilities. Students receive their class assignments via the school Intranet and can access the Internet through desktop PCs installed in the Computer Room or through Ethernet connections in the Student Lounge.

The MBA Program
The Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy (ICS) offers students the opportunity to earn an MBA degree in International Business Strategy at Hitotsubashi University. In order to meet the requirements of an MBA degree, students must take a minimum of 66 credits during the First Year. This requirement applies to students in both the One-Year Program and the Two-Year Program at Hitotsubashi ICS.
Course work in the MBA program consists of two-credit or four-credit courses. Individual classes are 120 minutes in duration. Therefore, typically, a two-credit course is a four-month-long course that meets once a week for 2.0 hours per week, or a two-month-long course that meets twice a week for 4.0 hours per week. A four-credit course is typically a four-month-long course that meets twice a week for 4.0 hours per week. Classes are scheduled in three or four time slots: once in the morning (9:45 am start) during Term 1, and twice in the morning (8:30 am start) during Term 2 (Winter), Term 3 (Spring), and Term 4 (Summer), and twice in the afternoon during all the terms.
Students in the Two-Year Program have the option of custom-building their second year curriculum, which is basically comprised of activities that apply what they have learned in the First Year to the real world. They consult with faculty members in choosing from a wide array of options, such as participating in a company internship program, spending a semester overseas in a student exchange program, developing a business plan for starting up a new venture, conducting an individual research project, or searching for post-MBA job opportunities.
