Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Frankfurt University’s Goethe Business School have joined forces and established the Duke Goethe Executive MBA, a dual- degree, 22-month executive MBA program for working executives.
The Duke Goethe Executive MBA program officially launched in May 2005 with an inaugural class of 33 students. The program enables working professionals to pursue an MBA degree without career interruption. Teaching will take place mainly at Frankfurt’s new Campus Westend, combined with two weeks of classroom instruction at the Duke campus in North Carolina and through the Internet using Duke’s distance-learning platform.
To enrich the learning experience of the Duke Goethe Executive MBA program, two new features have been added. As part of the Duke University residencies in terms 3 and 7 in the United States, Duke Goethe students will visit Washington D.C and New York City to participate in tailor-made educational activities. All Duke Goethe students starting the program from 2008 onwards will join the 3-day immersion programs organized by the non-profit organization Washington Campus.
Duke Goethe students should have a minimum of three years of work experience. The GMAT test is required as proof of quantitative proficiency. The TOEFL test is required for applicants whose native language is not English. Waivers may be granted for the TOEFL. Upon graduation, students will earn both a Duke MBA and a Goethe MBA.
The curriculum is based on both Duke’s Cross Continent and Weekend Executive MBA programs. In all, a student will take 18 courses. Eleven core courses and one integrative capstone course will lay the foundation of modern management knowledge, and six elective courses will allow students to personalize the program and concentrate on individually chosen issues. The set of elective courses will change from year to year in order to make the program responsive to the changing business demands.
Duke faculty teach two- thirds of the courses, and Frankfurt faculty one third. Both parties plan to contribute an equal amount of teaching. Some courses are offered in a weekend format with classes running from Thursday to Saturday, and other courses are offered in a place and space format.
About the Program
PLACE is the face-to-face learning that occurs during one-week residencies in Frankfurt, Germany, and Durham, North Carolina. Classroom residencies employ traditional classroom teaching at the beginning of each term. They allow for close interaction with faculty, about six to eight hours per day, as well as highly interactive work with team members and contact with program staff. In the place model, students learn to think on their feet and to benefit from the team-building and communication-building endemic to a face-to-face environment.
SPACE is the distance-learning portion of the program that is facilitated by technology. Both schools offer a customized web environment with various multi-media components such as CD-ROMs and real audio and video, in addition to traditional texts and handouts. Learning occurs via chat rooms, electronic bulletin boards, online team meetings, faculty office hours and e-mail. In addition, each student has access to both the Goethe University and The Fuqua School of Business libraries and databases. In space, students can reflect on their work, and pace themselves according to the demands of their jobs and personal needs.
Weekend
There is no better way to reinforce knowledge than to put it into practice immediately. In the weekend model, students attend classes every third weekend interacting with top-ranked faculty and high-quality peers while learning new business concepts. Because students immediately return to the workplace, they can apply their new learning without delay, strengthening their takeaway and creating immediate value for their organizations.
