Larry Perelman ’08 was 18 years old when he first met Bill Buckley. “I wrote to Bill expressing my gratitude to him for having emboldened Soviet Jews to come to this great nation, and asking for the opportunity to express my gratitude to him by playing the piano,”he wrote in a recent tribute to Buckley in the National Review.

They became friends, and over the next 14 years Perelman played for Buckley and his guests many times. Perelman was preparing to play for him again last Wednesday — Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations — and dined at his house on Tuesday, the night before he died.

NYT columnist William Kristol wrote of Buckley’s last supper with Perelman:

“It’s fitting that he spent it with someone who had sought Bill out because of his uncompromising defense of freedom, the lodestar for his political and intellectual efforts. It was a fitting end to an admirable life.”
