Indian Thoughts on Productivity - September 7th, 2010

Productivity is an important factor for any organization at the micro level & for the nation at the macro level. Higher the productivity level more will be the profit. At the micro level Productivity is the ratio between output of finished goods & service and input of resources utilized in the production process.
At the macro-level it depicts the overall performance of an economy or a nation.

Productivity = Output / Input

Definition

“The ratio between volume of output as measured by the production indices and the corresponding volume of labour input as measured by production indices & corresponding volume of labour input as measured by employment indices”


Factors influencing Productivity

Human factors
Job Maturity
Means they should know their job quite well, having expertise in their own field.

Psychological Maturity
It is related to readiness to do the job. If the individuals are interested to do the job, the productivity level will be higher. It is related to motivation

Non-human Factors

Plant location, capacity and plant layout

Production Planning & control

Material handling

Inventory control

Maintenance system

Waste management

Quality control

Research & development

Transportation facility

Availability of raw material and fuels etc.

Do Yoga

Yoga creates a sense of well –being for all, which develop the service attitude. Following ‘yoga’ will lead to balanced ,poised and serene life in this busy world. people can concentrate in a better manner and result in higher productivity level.


Developing SQ or Spiritual Quotient

Higher the SQ, higher the productivity level. It is one of the emerging techniques. SQ is the capability to behave with compassion and wisdom with everyone. SQ emphasizes to maintain inner and outer peace under any situation .

There is strength in peace. There is strength in calmness. There is strength in love…. but it goes unnoticed. What you cannot win with a gun, you can win through love. This power of love needs to be realized. It is indeed the most powerful thing in the world.

To improve the productivity level overall development is required. It means not skill development or overall personality or character needs to be developed.

Follow Ethics

Moral and ethical standards decide effectiveness. These values help us to develop ourselves. The managerial functions like directing controlling becomes easier creating goodwill and harmony in the business organizations

Karma Yoga
To improve productivity level employees should work with full dedication and commitment. , as if work is worship and they do not expect anything in return. They need to work in a detached manner.

Dignity of work

No work is great or small All works whether it is a peons job or a general managers job all are of equal importance. There is nothing to be ashamed to be doing a cobblers or a sweeper’s job.


Dharmic Management

It emphasizes co-operation, harmonious work place where individuals are not under stress..
Working in a team has a magic of its own. Teamwork hardly ever fails. But as team they succeed as they put their energies together & the synergy creates anew magic.

Self motivation

An individual has to be self motivated person, for whom no external motivating factor is required. Internal motivation is the inner gratification, not for success or winning. It is a feeling of accomplishment, rather than just achieving a goal.
