What makes a B-School great ?

The latest issue of BusinessWeek of 19th instant (http://www.businessweek.com) says four factors decide your future as you keep your fingers crossed in selecting the best B-School for admissions.

They are :

1. High-caliber faculty

2. Grading system

3. Internship

4. Wide choice of electives

In India, only five leading management opinion leaders commission B-School
ranking by a Gallup which includes Random digit dialing (RDD).

The Key Influence People are :

1. Outlook
2. Business India
3. Business Today
4. Consortium for Strategic Management and Organisation Development
(Cosmode)
5. All India Management Association

HOW B-SCHOOL RANKING IS DONE

Measuring minimum five years' worth of data ensures that short-term
improvements or problems don't sway the results.

To eliminate outliers, several B-Schools of the total 214 existing in the country today are removed from ranking consideration due to low response rates.

Recruiters are also asked to rate their top 10 schools according to the
quality of a B-school's grads and their company's experience with MBAs
past and present.

They are polled on Management Development Program (MDP)s as well
since these bring companies closer to the academic world.

MDPs also pave the way for firms to peep in when they need to draft in
freshers for entry-level management.

Companies rate schools at which they have actively recruited--
-----on campus or off--in recent years. Each school's total score is
divided by the number of responding companies that recruited
from the school.

Because there tends to be greater differences among schools in the
corporate survey than in the student poll, recruiter opinion can
have a bigger impact on the overall ranking.

Finally, each school's intellectual-capital rating is calculated by
tallying faculty members' academic journal entries in 20 publications,
from the Journal of Accounting Research to the Harvard Business Review.

The Key Influence People also search The New York Times, The Wall Street
Journal, and Business Week, adding points if a professor's book was
reviewed there.

The scores are then adjusted for faculty size. The final intellectual-capital
score accounts for 10% of a school's final grade while the B-School's
research output in the form of case studies developed, live projects handled, workshops conducted, MDPs etc., form a crucial part of the ranking process and
evaluation by the corporates.

Can Indian B-schools attain world-class status ?

The answer is simple.

Yes, they can and though it is an undertaking steeped with significant challenges, it is certainly not an impossible goal.

The question is—would they want to and do they have the will to do so ?

It is amazing that a pitiful upstart like Icfai National College had set the record straight by enrolling 15,000 management grads in 170 colleges all over India since 2003 and got 6500 of them already placed in good
companies!
