globally, the newly floated Rs 14,000 crore RP-Sanjiv Goenka group has now come up with a world class B-School with special focus on retail management. Christened as International Management Institute (IMIKolkata), the management institute has already teamed up with the Oxford Institute of Retail Management, part of the SAID Business School of the University of Oxford, for conducting research on retail management jointly.

The agreement with Oxford aims at making the IMI-K a leading centre of excellence for retail management in Asia. IMI-K will begin classes on Wednesday, Sanjiv Goenka, chairman, RP-Sanjiv Goenka

group, which also owns Spencer's Retail among others, said.

Goenka said, “IMIKolkata students will be directly benefited by the Oxford association. They will be able to specialise in Re tail Management studies and participate in research activities. We are very optimistic to carry forward this association for the benefit of Indian retail market.” He also indicated that IMIKolkata is in negotiation with some more top business schools to bring these on board as partners in curriculum development and other activities.

It may be mentioned here that for the fourth time in five years, India has been ranked as the most attractive nation for retail investment among 30 emerging markets by the USbased global management consulting firm, A T Kearney in its 8th annual Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) 2009.

The MasterCard Worldwide Index of Business Confidence (done jointly with National Council of Applied Economic Research), has identified the Indian retail sector is the most attractive market for investment.

The group has roped in professor Ashis Bhattacharyya, former senior professor of Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta to head IMI and professor Himangshu Pau, former Dean, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok as its Dean. The company has spent close to Rs 100 crore to develop the state-of-theart infrastructure with fullfledged hostel capacity of 240 rooms. Spread over three-acre campus at Alipore in downtown Kolkata.

The Institution's first full-time two-year postgraduate diploma course starts from Wednesday after having received AICTE approval. Goenka said that IMI Kolkata will offer a number of merit scholarships to outstanding students.
