Should I buy a laptop

Today it is very fashionable for students to go about with a laptop. But I am wondering about whether these laptops are really put to use in the classroom and give the student a competitive edge or are just a way to waste parents money. I myself want to buy a laptop and unless I clear this out for my dad there is no way he is going to buy me one. So people please pitch in your arguments.

You don't really need a laptop. If you are in a decent college, then it must have a IT lab you can use. You have your friends / colleagues to do project work with.

Its a headache to carry it around with you anyway. I tried to avoid carrying the laptop as much as I could when I was doing my mba. Used internet from my sony erricson to check mails through college wifi.

I agree with Karthik partly, yes, most colleges have computer labs but what if you need to assignments at home or want to access the net at home, or have to work late into the night. Computers are the gateway to the huge hoard of info on the internet anytime day or night. On the other hand investing in a laptop can be expensive and so one needs to think and decide carefully.

Well it depends on your needs and requirements. Investing on laptop won’t go for a waste. You will get used to information system and tools that will help you in the long run. If u have a desktop at home I dont think there's any need for an additional comp. Invest in a good external hard-drive like a pen-drive & u can carry around all ur important files. The only benefit of a laptop (that I have observed) is that if u have last minute preparations to do for ur presentations during lecture-the laptop comes to rescue. Internet connections are always available in the lab. Besides the laptop is very cumbersome to carry around.
If u still would like to invest in one then go for a windows based one. Preferrably HP or Lenovo. Be prepared to loosen ur pockets by atleast Rs.45,000

It depends... There is a guy who has spent his entire first year without a laptop...

I am agreed what the Kartik said. If you have a system at your home and a USB drive with you, then you can easily cope with ur projects and seminars for the first year, but the second year is very critical and work pressure is also high, project reports, training reports, seminars...all become hectic and time become short...so in second year you must have a lapi with you so u work when u roam...

but if it is only a style icon for u..then its totally waste of money...
