Perdue Farms is a major chicken processing company based in Salisbury, Maryland, United States with annual sales in excess of $4.6B
The company was founded in 1920 by Arthur Perdue[1] with his wife, Pearl Perdue, who had been keeping a small flock of chickens.[3] The company started out selling eggs, then in 1925, Perdue built the company's first hatchery, and began selling layer chicks to farmers instead of only eggs for human consumption.[3] His son Frank Perdue joined the company in 1939 at age 19 after dropping out of college.[4] In the 1940s, the company made a transition from selling layer chicks to broiler chickens

The company was incorporated as A.W. Perdue & Son and Frank Perdue assumed leadership in the 1950s.[1][6] The company also began contracting with local farmers to raise its birds and supplying chickens for processing as well as opening a second hatchery in North Carolina during this period.

You may know our company from our poultry products. The PERDUE® brand is the number-one brand of premium fresh chicken in the eastern U.S. Perdue is also a leading food and agricultural company recognized globally for quality, service and reliability.
As the third generation to lead our company, I'm proud to uphold the values that go back to our founding on my grandfather's farm in 1920.
I invite you to learn more about the company that stands behind the PERDUE® brand and the Perdue family's commitment to quality in everything our company does.

You could say the eggs came first. As a railway express agent, Arthur W. Perdue noticed that the poultry men loading their eggs and chickens onto the train seemed to be financially successful. In 1917, the same year he married, Arthur Perdue decided he was going to make poultry his business.

Pros
Perdue Farms is a company in which you can grow with and perform several jobs in a career. Management cares alot about associates and the benefits are outstanding. There are few companies that match up to 5% on the 401K and Perdue does.
Cons
Perdue tends to employ people you would not normally work with, low income types with poor work histories.

About 100 Perdue Farms employees received 30-day notices Tuesday that their jobs will be eliminated by March 27. Perdue will hire a subcontractor to hire chicken catchers at the company's poultry processing plants in Sussex County, Del. and Accomack County, Va. Workers said Perdue will be using a company from North Carolina called Unicon to catch chickens.

Jeffrey Harris is a shop steward and acts as a liaison between the catchers and the company. Harris said he thinks Perdue is switching to a subcontractor to cut costs.

"They don't want this kind of work to be unionized because unions give employees higher wages and better benefits," he said. "By going through a subcontractor, they are avoiding having to deal with union organizers."

Chicken catchers said they make anywhere from $40,000 to $45,000 a year. According to Harris, working for the subcontractor would cut their wages by about $20,000. Many catchers said this is just not enough money to raise their families.

"With the pay rate we are accustomed to, we already built a lifestyle around it," said Cordae Showell, one of the chicken catchers who would be affected by Perdue's move. "The amount it's going to drop, we would have to change our whole living style. It's not possible." Showell has a family of five at home.

Perdue Farms' values – quality, integrity, trust and teamwork – are shared by the more than 20,000 associates who work at Perdue facilities throughout the eastern half of the U.S. and around the globe, and the 7,500 farm families who raise our chickens and sell us their grain.

Our family and farm tradition is always in our hearts, but our innovative spirit defines our future. We embrace change, pursue continuous improvement and invest in the technologies and opportunities that will drive our business forward.

At Perdue, quality is the measure of our character. Our commitment to quality extends beyond products and service to include our leadership in food safety, environmental stewardship and poultry welfare.

We care about our neighbors.
Our associates live in the communities where they work, and we care about them, their families and their neighbors. We support our communities through company contributions and through the volunteer efforts of our associates. Many of our facilities lead their communities in fundraising for such agencies as the United Way, March of Dimes and American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
