Shoe sales and recession-Any relation? - February 3rd, 2009

When most of the retail industry is reeling under severe downturn;Nike has posted 9% profit Q-on-Q.They say that they are going to concentrate on online ads since its is getting more revenues for them. But what is the logic you will say for rising shoe sales when the entire world is on slowdown?

I think this could be due to the climate.Since this is winter season ppl would prefer to have solid shoes which is mandatory for this season. So ppl could have ordered new shoes online.

Moreover,Nike has concentrated more on Non-US sales which also payed them the ROI.

Any other relation b/w shoe sales and recession?

-Deepak.

hii...i think in recession all the sectors are affected..shoe sales also gets affected directly or indirectly..though shoes are necessarily but there will be slowdown in the growth rate ..it wont go negative..

The sales of branded shoes may be affected as during recession period people wont go for branded one they will opt for Indian brands...

Shoes are like FMCG products which are the basic necessities and are required, be it recession or boom in the economy.

shopping is like retail therapy and buying Nike shoes are more practical than buying high heels so .... actually I don't really get the connection with Nike's increased profit and the recession! they could have streamlined operations and cut costs, etc so their profit went up?

There is a direct co-relation between women and shopping and shoe sales and recession

Women relate shoes to sensuality and hence their fantasy or collection of shoes in their wardrobe.

Recession affects that directly, and hence the dip in sales

I do not think there is a direct relation between shoe sales and Recession . A freak incident cannot be considered a commonality
