Open Book test-Do we need this or not?

Usually,exams are written only in a well-protected environment where there will be no books allowed.But there are also exams which is different than the conventional ones.They are called open book test,where ppl are allowed to enter the exam halls with their books and they can write the exam with their books open for reference.Is this a worthwhile measure of writing the exam?Ofcourse,ppl mite argue tht this is against tradition and students won't study for their exams.There can also be a way where Q.paper can be set in such a way that ppl who have read the entire contents of the book and assimilated the concepts can only pass the exam.Questions need not be a direct one and a student should know which formula to use under what circumstances.So this is one way of making students learn even in the exam hall rather than the usual rote based learning.Open book test will remove the fear of exams from the minds of the students and they will not have so much stress about the exams.This will make the students to approach the exams with broader mind.

open book exams are usually application base. the questions cannot be answered unless you understand the topic well. so book is just to help you in reminding, but you should understand well
