Is it possible for Roadways to turn around like Railways? - July 4th, 2008

Railways,as we all know was a coughing about half a decade back. But now it has become a case study in Harvard and it is rightly called the "poor man's airlines".Our Railway minister has turned the IR(Indian Railways) into a profitable business. In the recent Railway budget he proudly told,"if IR was a corporation or a listed entity, then it could one of the Fortune 500 companies in the world".Wat a gr8 accomplishment!!!!!!!!!!Lets think about the roadways now.Is it possible for the roadways to bring turn around story like this?Wat is main reaon for the roadways to trade losses. Some of the key points coming striking my mind:

1.Railways is taken care by Central Govt. But Roadways is coming under the state Govt.So there can some little savings since it being managed by individual states.

2.Functionality of roadways is entirely diff frm railways.Trains connected important cities but buses connect all remote parts of the village to the towns/cities.So buses have to ply even for <10 ppl which is not cost effective.

Are they both valid reasons?Anything besides this striking your mind? Please pour your thoughts here.
