Their main arguments are:
- It will lead to the closure of tens of thousands of small kirana shops across the country and endanger livelihood of 40 million people
- It may bring down prices initially, but fuel inflation once multinational companies get a stronghold in the retail market
- Farmers may be given remunerative prices initially, but eventually they will be at the mercy of big retailers
- Small and medium enterprises will become victims of predatory pricing policies of multinational retailers
- It will disintegrate established supply chains by encouraging monopolies of global retailers

Re: FDI in retail: boon or bane(open forum discussion) - January 14th, 2013

I have researched a lot on this topic since last few days..
Following is my opinion inputs welcomed
Government has decided to allow FDI up to 51%u0025 in retail. This will pave the way for MNC retailers to enter India and grab the Indian market, leading to loss of jobs and livelihood for billions of Indians. The entry of giant MNC retailers in any segment of the market will impact small retailers, farmers and small producers across the country. . Clearly, there will be severe job losses if giant MNC supermarkets are allowed entry into the Indian market. the entry of giant MNCs into agricultural procurement would make the problems worse for the farmers. As against the markets that operate today, where several traders have to compete with each other in order to buy the farmers%u2019 produce, there will be a single buyer in the case of the MNCs. This will make the farmers dependent on the MNCs and vulnerable to exploitation. Concentration has resulted in displacement of small retail stores, squeezing of suppliers and elimination of consumer choices. Policies should encourage the growth of Domestic Retail to make Supply Chain Effective & Efficient. Inviting FDI in Retail is easy money for all. It would exploit Indian resources for the benefit of West. One day when this FDI starts going back, we would face Recession. this policy is going to make Indians working class laborers for rest of known century. FDI will this help the foreigners to take away all the balance wealth to their respective countries.
