Is unionism and worker association the only way for the workers to get their rights? -

We always see that when workers propose any demand , it is not fulfilled. This calls for strike which leads to loss to company, this loss can be financial, operational or reputation loss. After a significant loss the company normally agrees.. Is that the only way to sort out things?
Is unionism is only way of getting acceptance to various demands?
