Are police officials overstressed? - June 13th, 2007

Three cops die in city within a week, police department believes lack of rest triggered two of the deaths

G Mohiuddin Jeddy Navi Mumbai

Three Navi Mumbai police officers passed away just within a week’s time, due to natural causes and the third followed in an accident. All three deaths occurred on a Saturday.

The death of the first was on June 2 and the latter two followed on June 9. Last week, head constable Bhiku Karde (49), of the Rabale police station was found dead in the chowky at Rabale. A second cop Nandkumar Salunkhe (45), who was the head constable at CBD Belapur police station died when he was on duty.

Police commissioner Ramrao Wagh said, “Salunkhe was a diabetic patient and died due to a brain haemorrhage which caused due to high blood pressure.”

Salunkhe, who was the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of Zone 1, had been on night duty. He complained of uneasiness at around 8.45 pm while going to the CBD police station from the Police Head Quarters in the same node.

He was rushed to MGM Hospital in CBD and later shifted to MGM hospital in Vashi when his condition turned critical.

However, he passed away later in the evening. Salunkhe was a resident of Kalamboli and was cremated in the node on Sunday morning.

He is survived by his wife, his three daughters.” Police sources on condition of anonymity claimed that inadequate rest may have led to Salunkhe’s demise.

Another head constable Pandarinath Wade (55) died in an accident at Manora in the rural area in Thane on Saturday. He was travelling to his native place in Palghar.

Wagh said, “He was on his bike when he was hit by an oncoming tempo. Preliminary reports suggest that it was a hit and run case. We will get a clearer picture once Manora police station gives us all the details.”

Like Salunkhe, Wade too was a resident of Kalamboli. Wade is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Last week, another head constable Bhiku Karde (49) who was seriously injured during a bank robbery case, was found dead at Rabale MIDC police chowky again on Saturday morning. The post mortem report revealed confirmed that Karde died of a heart attack.

Its not a joke dude..... There are professional counsellors/psychologists working for Indian Police to help their officers get relieved from all the stress they suffer from work. It is true, that stress and many times over-stress happens, but its the stories of all the jobs. Think of the IT sector and think how much stress these people go through during work.

Regards,
Gaurav Mittal
