Why more ppl in India are servie oriented rather than entrepreneurship?

1)...why more ppl prefer to do a job rather than start his own busines?

2)...does ppl in India abstain from experimenting with risk?

i feel the prime reason for this is the history of India...we have been ruled by a foreign power for 150 years,,,so we majorly do have that frame of mind of serving...

moreover India still being majorly poor looks to satisfy their basic needs...which gets easily met by servicing...

Decades of 'license raj' not just stymied entrepreneurship in our society but made it almost impossible for a common person (without any 'contacts' in the government) to start something new.
Entrepreneurship was therefore seen as 'risky' by most middle class families and government service as 'secure'.

People in India are more service oriented because In service u get a fix salary and there is no risk. On the other side when u start a business the returns u get are not fixed, sometimes you can get more profit and sometimes you have to face loss also. There is a big risk in business.. And people don't want to take risk in business and in money matter. And many of the people have great ideas and have the risk taking capacity also like those all who came in Zee tv's Show "BUSINESS BAZIGAR" but they don't get financial support or society support and hence after having skills and ideas also, they have to go back to service.

Actually its not true that there is no risk in service industry. Instead there are more risks in service industry than others because of tremendous competition and customer expectations.

Coming to our discussion, Entrepreneurship in India is not given preference because students in colleges are trained like that. We are educated in our colleges such that we learn well, do business cases, make presentations and how we can perform well in other organizations.
Teaching structure need to be changed in colleges where they should give more importance on entrepreneurship education, then we can see changes in future.

People don't necessarily require experience or money to become entrepreneurs. A risk cannot be judged until we face it. Entrepreneurship or businesses (for students) can be started at a small level. For eg: students need very low investments in starting a business as contractors - say bringing clients to the website designers(Just a perception). Students should be made to learn to start from small level so that they can learn, earn a little in start which could at least boost up their confidence.
Colleges and professors can help students in such endeavors be it financially or by giving them contacts or fulfiling any other requirements. Govt should also provide subsidies for enhancing students growth.

Just to add on to the point made previously by rj, we must look at our historical context for the lack of entrepreneurship in a big way, but before that we must examine the fact that is there really a lack of entrepreneurship in India. I live in the western part of the country and you see the level of entrepreneurship in Rajasthan and Gujarat, esp in the manufacturing and trade sectors, you go down south, you see IT companies in huge numbers.......... I am not very aware of the other three regions, but we as a people are known to be resilient and street-wise money smart people................coming to the immediate question, we can break up our history into the pre-colonization phase, the colonization phase and the post-colonization or independent india phase. During the pre-colonization phase, India was a globally reputed culture for its products and a large number of small artisans made a variety of products which were carried by merchants across the globe........however due to the cast system, there must have been restrictions on the entrepreneuial capability of people from the lower castes due to social stigma and fear of reprisal................coming to the colonization phase, here we see our entrepreneurship capabilities both being crushed and coming out in full bloom................in general across the nation, manufacturing was encouraged by the british to facilitate exports of finished goods at cheap rates, this spurred many families to enter into manufacturing in this phase, including famous names like birlas, goenkas, grasims, arvind mills etc............but at the grassroot level, there was a deterent to entrepreneurship as this was a transitory phase and due to the high level of taxes and restrictions, people could not explore areas of their choice but were forced towards some industries which were beneficial to the british, like textiles...........this phase was where our grand parents lived in and hence they saw the government servants living a decent life, more importantly respectfull life in the eyes of the society...........this image lingered on and got further entrenched during the first 40 years of our independence inspite of efforts by the government to encourage SME's................the phase of the emergency further crippled the green shoots of entrepreneurship that were starting to emerge.............in the way of huge taxes and license raj..........it was only post-liberalization that there has been a gradual reduction of restrictions to start one's own business...............and this phase of reduction of restrictions still continues and we should hopefully see the next generation much more entrepreneurial in their attitude due to the much more open environment their parents have lived in.

Entreprenuership is no doubt a very romantacised concept, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Its a way of life and only a few are cut out for it. Just like being a F1 champ is good, but may not be true for many.
An assured fatter bank balance every 1st is a big comfort to most.
As they say, higher the uncertainity, higher the interest rates. But then many of us do prefer Govt. Securities against Junk Bonds!!

Its all because of the lack of opportunities existing in the indian market ...

Even after independence ... there has been no independence of mindset ...
Right from schooling to college ... things are preplanned irrespective of the wish of the kid ...

Also , i think the biggest issue is lack of research depts. in the premier colleges ... which leave us on a back step ...
