Thumbs up Is quality just a myth in India - August 25th, 2009

The Indian products and manufacturing techniques.... Why are we unable to sustain against global competition.
Our mindset towards quality....is not at all encouraging...

Indian attitude of "chalta hai" which leads to an undemanding customer which in turn lets people get away with substandard products and services...
evryday we see some or the other sting operation on adulteration...

is our government doing enough...and do we really care about quality..

chalta hai approach is not a national or universal concept ,it is a personal concept and attitude of a particular person towards a situation.if quality is not our moto then why so many INDIAN companies are going for ISO certification ,also AGMARK and FPO certification is of no use ,in many areas specially i will mention the IT sector where we are ahead of many advanced nations , IF QUALITY IS NOT OUR CONCERN THEN WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING FUEL EFFICIENT AUTOMOBILS,now a days so many multiantional companies are selling their premium products in our country,
there is a drawback in our policy formulation and focus of govt in encouraging competition , till ninties before the new economic policy of 1991, govt policy was to protect the Indian industry from international competition by restricting the entry of big companies in our country, Indian companies were forced to sell their products in the domestic market to fulfil the needs of our economy this led to the growth of low grade products, Indian companies were not allowed to export their products this act of govt curbed their international competitive exposure . thanks to new economic policy we slowly but surely moved towards a new and competitive world- in this way we said good bye to ambassador and fiat

It's wrong to say that quality, or lack of it, is an Indian speciality. I can assure you from personal experience that the situation is not a whole lot better in the U.K. either. The only difference would be that the consumers are relatively more demanding. Which brings us back to the point raised by Ashwini, that the IT sector's better quality is simply because their clients are more demanding.
In the long run, we get what we ask for. For instance, the british population demands so little from our educational system that it's no wonder that many high school passouts can barely spell, let alone compose a grammatical sentence.
Bleah - this all gets rather depressing.

yes its surely a myth n india. thats the reson we dont have a microsoft or ibm in india...we have millionaires but not companies that can go global..take any name be it mcdonalds, reebok, nike, shell..its justbeyong indian capabilities and the reason is lack of outlook and a well defined vision. here individuality matters rather than corporate sucess.

Re: Is quality just a myth in India - August 26th, 2009

No, i don't think that quality is just a myth in India. I feel that in today's scenario it is mostly on the quality that the companies are fighting. In today's advertisement also we can see companies more often speak about their quality standards that they are maintaining and that they are better than others coz of their quality. We can see from example of companies like nokia and airtel, they are costly then others but coz of their quality product or service they are surviving or are still in the list of best. Ya, sometimes companies do make mistakes in maitaining quality but they also keep rectifying their mistakes. And the most cases of adulteration which are recently coming in news are not of those big companies that they are doing wrong practices but rather than its all of small people who are using the big brand names and in their name selling adulterated stuff thus spoiling the name of the companies.

Re: Is quality just a myth in India - August 26th, 2009

Good Topic for discussion
well i think that we study and see in various news and in magazines that Indian products does not meet the international standards. Its sad to read such news as we are major contributor in global economy. If we focus on the standards of Indian products its somewhat right that we lack quality and standard for standards of global market. But i strongly think that all of our products are not sub standard and we are also doing good specially in the field of pharmacy. If we consider our foods and beverages section we lag behind but it doesnt mean we are not maintaining quality actually India have lots of small sector companies who are producing very high quality funds due to lack of attention of government these firms are not able to go into international market
At last i can say that we are improving in terms of quality for international market and we are also doing good in some sectors and if we lag behind in some area for this Developed countries are also responsible because of their extra strict quality standards for developing countries

No, quality is not a myth, but nowadays, a it is a must in India. Yes, initially manufacturers/service providers did try to give customers a ride, but now with the customers going wiser with all the grievance redressal-fora and moreover, due to competition - an alternative options always being available to customer, the things are coming to track. Any place where the business is regulated, switching barriers are high, very often sloppy product/services too starts following. But recent years, with the advent of multiple service providers have seen an improvement...even 'sarkari' companies - like SBI or MTNL are trying to improve their product.

Re: Is quality just a myth in India - August 26th, 2009

I'll say quality is not a myth anymore because we live in a developing nation. Our country could'nt have excelled if we would have not focussed on quality.

Moreover, we should not forget that many MNCs (say infy or satyam or wipro) provide outsourcing operations to foreign companies. This itself shows the trust of other companies on the quality of products/service standards of India and our MNCs.

Indians have been preserving quality right from bottom- Mumbai Dabbawalahs (having six sigma status) to peak - Infosys (CII Exim award for business excellence & recognised as a role model in TQM). So than how can quality be called a myth in our nation.

Quality is our belief on a certain product - whether its good or bad. People should change their attitude and spend more money, thus discouraging non-quality or non-standard products.

I'll say we are best in quality wrt IT sector although we lack in several other sectors. But that does'nt mean that we have ignored this fact. Govt is trying its level best to curb these problems.
See this : Quality council website of India for more info - Welcome to the official website of Quality Council of India : Working for “National Well Being”

Quality is what we get @ higher price. If we change our attitude and pay our taxes FAITHFULLY on time and play more in white rather than black money than that money can be used for maintaining infrastructure & quality standards.
We just need to change our minds and outcome will be good for all and we'll successfully compete with other global MNCs.

Regards -
Rohan Jain
