Future of Indian IT Industry - February 15th, 2007

India is growing @ 9% every year.55% of the growth is contributed by Services sector.IT sector employs close to 2 lakh people and there will be a shortage of 5 lakh people by 2010 as predicted by NASSCOM.But the Indian IT companies are still fighting in red ocean. One company's gain is another one's loss. They don't have niche market for themselves.Looking forward, the same trend won't be enough to sustain the growth of the industry.

A company should create a blue ocean to grow in the future.Blue ocean is creating an uncontested market place for an organization. To create a blue ocean every organization need to have value innovation.Simple examples would be Microsoft which is still a pioneer in OS.SAP is still an undisputed leader in Application programs.Cisco systems is a giant in networking arena. These companies created a new market.Indisputably they are king of their of the market. On similar lines,I wish to see Indian companies creating their own market.

Blue ocean doesn't mean retrenching of manpower.Instead its about using it effectively. With the current industry-friendly policies of the Govt,I hope the companies could do a lot better.

Pour in your thoughts on this.

Deepak,I would like to present my thoughts on this

1)Creating a niche market is not that easy...unless and until we have a robust Research and Development sytem for our Indian companies..we cant grow innovatively

2)Innovation is synonymous with change and change shud be brought for a purpose..Who will govern that purpose? The customer ofcourse..which inturn implies, the IT shud be brought closer to the masses..Tapping of literate but IT illiterate masses and tapping of illiterate masses can sow seeds in this direction..companies shud strive in conducting such kinds of programs of IT education..this would help in identifying the market need as to where to pitch in innovation..what shud be developed?whats still lacking? These quesns can be answered only if efforts are put in this direction

3)Look at this perspective..an IIT gradate heads straight away to European countries..coz he is paid hell lot of money over there..The problem of "Brain
Drain"..If we stand to loose such potential graduates of such world class institutes, who will carry out the job of "innovation" here?Efforts shud also be put in this direction by companies who pay to these graduates good amount of perks and packages and then utilise them in this field

4)The ministry of IT shud take steps in this direction to integrate the entire system of Information Technology..viz integrating Scientific development with R&D of the companies..with the ministry itself..and then state it's mission and goal which shall be communicated to all the entities in this area..co-operation is reqd by the IT companies in this direction,so that all of them can work for one mission, one goal of developing India's IT industry and taking it to global standards...

Future of Indian IT Industry ...... Your article on future of Future of Indian IT Industry is quite good. The growth of IT-firms and the craze is amazing in INDIA. But not many people will stick to one company. If an IT firm employs (for example) 1000 professionals in one year, at the end of the year the same rate of employees leave the jobs ..joining the other company thus resulting in High Rate of Labour Turnover. If we take the example of TCS... it has showed to 500 and more employees the way to outside world (.i.e they have removed them from their jobs). If employee attrition is one issue, employer removing the employees is also one issue. The IT - Management should see to that Employee attrition and Employer showing the way to the gate is reduced. Overall...the growth rate is quite good for IT-firms.

cheers !
