How to Prepare for B-School Extempore Topics - August 1st, 2008

For those of you unfamiliar with an extempore, a
topic is given to you as individually. You are given
just two minutes to think about it and then you are
expected to speak non stop for 5 minutes your views
on the topic.

The objective is to truly assess your communication
skills. You are evaluated on:

- Fluency

- Grammar

- Clarity of thought

- Structure of viewpoints

- Confidence

The extempore process is basically a mindgame,
where they want you to become nervous by putting
you into direct spotlight.

Not all the B-School's will have an extempore. FMS -
Delhi does have an extempore round, the IIM's do
not have it always as part of their selection process.

Your preparation for the extempore should be
similar to the Group Discussion. You should

- Practice with a wide range of topics that are
abstract, or political in nature.

- Practice in front of a mirror to evaluate your body
language and ability to speak non stop for 5 minutes.
While it may seem that 5 minutes is a short amount
of time, however use a alarm clock to measure the
time you spoke. You will be surprised how quickly
your viewpoints end.

- Watch your body language. If you use your hands
to stress upon points a lot, then be careful in this
instance as they will scrutinise each and every
aspect. The objective is to appear calm and
composed, and so you should not use your hands too
excessively.

You do not require excessive preparation for B-School extempore topics . The main thing is to build your knowledge base as wide as possible. Try to use economics in your strategies for B-school extempore topics to succeed

Example of an extempore Question found on yahoo :

Quote:
How should I prepare for an extempore, topics of which include situations, such as if you were this.....?

Tomorrow, we are having an extempore competition.
The topics given to us will be situations such as if you were the principal of the school, what would you do.
What should I do, if I face such topics.
I mean, I can't openly rebel against the current principal's ideas.
And we can also get proverbs. What are the common proverbs I should prepare for ?

Answer:
Quote:
I would hazard a guess that if you were asked to tell what you would do if you were the principal was one of the topics then the principal is open to hearing your ideas. It is all in how you do it. State your ideas in a positive manner, ( don't bash the Principal's current ideas) giving reasoned back-up for any changes you might make.

Here is a link to a list of proverbs.
