Both Polytechnic and University are educational bodies that impart higher study programs to aspirants. Universities offer educational courses in almost all disciplines of study. They offer educational courses in areas of arts, science, law, commerce, business, engineering, and medical streams.

These courses are offered through the Colleges affiliated to the same or in the university campus itself. The courses offered by universities will last up to 2-5 years to complete. Polytechnics on the other hand are specialized institutions that offer education in a particular stream of study. Most of the polytechnics offer education in such a way as to improve the practical and technical skills of the participants. They mainly offer diploma or certificate courses, which can be completed within short time duration. Though these educational centers are similar in certain aspects, they do differ in many areas.

Polytechnic Courses and Opportunities

Polytechnics offer a lot of diploma courses in engineering to interested aspirants. The time duration of the course is 3 years for those who join the program after completing their 10th class studies. The diploma courses for HSC qualified students will last up to 2 years only. The technical education is usually offered in areas of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, IT, and in Electronics and Communication. After completion of the course, students can opt with higher education programs (like B.Tech/B.E courses) or search for a fruitful career.

University Courses and Opportunities

Universities offer a lot of courses to aspirants in diverse areas of study. The candidates with necessary qualification can pursue any of the courses with respect to their area of interest. After obtaining graduation or Post Graduation in a particular subject, the candidate can find job opportunities in their selected area.

Key differences between a Polytechnic and University

Universities are broader in approach, where the courses are completed in longer time duration. Polytechnics on the other hand offer centralized programs, which can be completed within shorter time period.
Polytechnics offer technical degree programs and are much practical in approach. Universities on the other hand offer equal emphasis to theoretical and practical sessions.

Polytechnics offer industry specific courses, which allow them to obtain rewarding careers with in short time duration rather than that of the courses offered by Universities.
