Deepoo Kumar from the metallurgy department of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) began a two-day fast in support of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. Nearly 5,000 teachers from across the state, said independent legislator Kapil Patil, also fasted all through Tuesday.
More than 5, 000 students and faculty from IIT-B will form a five-km human chain on Wednesday to support Hazare and his cause. The chain will snake through the institute's hostels and finally all will congregate outside the convocation hall. More than 10 students from the institute have also pledged to go on a fast on Wednesday.
"Nearly 300 students skipped dinner in support of Hazare on Tuesday," said Dinesh Joshi, one of the 15 students organizing the protest. "We all are victims of corruption and it is out responsibility to contribute to its eradication," he said.
The institute has a Facebook page, IIT-B Against Corruption, which garners support for events on the campus and its first candlelight march in support of Hazare was held in April.
