Establishing and maintaining the "after-market"

Aftermarket services are the natural extension to services provided by EMS providers. Aftermarket services include repair, after sales customer service, warranty, re-manufacturing, asset recovery, logistics, refurbishment and also recycling and disposal of materials.

Currently, the spread of aftermarket services has been concentrated within the consumer electronics space, where the new products are launched into the market at breakneck speed. This sector is more prominent to requests of repairs, refurbishments and recalls. While the current EMS focus still remains largely on the consumer electronics market, the focus is slowly shifting to automotive and medical sectors.

After-market refers to any market where the customers who purchase one product or service are likely to purchase a related, follow-on product.

The existence of an after-market is often a persuasive argument for manufacturers to stay in direct contact with end-users. Manufacturers will use postage-paid guarantee cards, for example, to keep track of the address of end-users. Aftermarket service includes product support for warranties, contracts, and parts sales.
