Network of HIV affected and NGOs

With a view to get the exact figures of HIV infected people, Madurai District Administration would soon form a network of the affected persons and the organisations working for them.
District Collector S S Jawahar said that such a network would also help the administration to extend all the help needed to the affected people.
It was also necessary to provide sex-education to adolescent students, he said.
Talking to reporters, P Perumalsamy, Director, Teacher Education Research and Training said that 1.5 lakh people in Tamil Nadu were living with HIV. While 25 to 30 lakh people have been infected by HIV, around 50 per cent of the newly infected were in the age group of 15-24.
The Red Ribbon Clubs were engaged in spreading awareness about the infection among students. He said 15 lakh students in 9,772 high school and higher secondary schools benefitted from the Adolescence Education Programme on HIV.
Perumalsamy said that UNICEF encouraged volunteers of the clubs to organise drama, elocution and painting competitions on the issue
