The Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur are the best universities in India according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was established in 1909. It was J.N. Tata’s dream to create an institution that would contribute to the development of India and it occupies nearly 400 acres of land in Bangalore, generously donated by the Maharaja of Mysore.

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The IITs are engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education.

Today there are 13 IITs across India and they are located in (plus date it was established as an IIT): Kharagpur (1951), Mumbai (1958), Chennai (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi (1963), Guwahati (1994), Roorkee (2001), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Punjab (2008) and Rajasthan (2008). Three additional ITTs are planned; this will take the total number of IITs 16.

Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur
The Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur was the first IIT and was established in 1951, in Kharagpur (near Kolkata) in the state of West Bengal. It has 29 academic departments, centres and schools, spread over a 2,100 acres campus. It has about 450 faculty, 3,000 undergraduates and 2,500 postgraduates.
IIT Kharagpur also has a medical technology school (School of Medical Science and Technology), a school of management (Vinod Gupta School of Management, a law school (Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law) and an infrastructure designing school (Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Designing and Management).
