Bangalore beats Delhi in cleanliness

Filthy roads and lack of dustbins across the city have pushed Delhi to the ninth position in a survey conducted by a multinational company to rank India’s cleanest cities.

Chandigarh ranked number one as it took the first position of the “cleanest city in the country” with a score of 144 points. This was way ahead of the other cities polled by AC Nielsen ORG-MARG as part of a survey commissioned by Lifebuoy soap.

The other cities, which ranked higher than Delhi in the poll were Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Lucknow and Trivandrum. The poll covered 4900 people in the 18 to 60 year age group across 18 state capitals.

The ratings were based on eleven cleanliness parameters like cleanliness of roads, involvement of municipal bodies and garbage disposal systems. The cleanliness Index was derived where the all-city average was set at 100, Associate Director, AC Nielsen, Vijay Udasi told PTI.

The financial hub of Indian, Mumbai may be getting a makeover, but its citizens are certainly not impressed. The survey showed that Mumbai ranks pretty low on cleanliness in terms of its citizens' perceptions.

According to the findings, Chennai (118), Kolkata (108) and Bangalore (108) have fared better than Mumbai on most counts. Even emerging urban centres like Lucknow, Bhubaneshwar and Thiruvananthapuram have scored higher.

"This report serves as an urgent wake-up call for all citizens on the need for playing our part in creating cleaner and healthier cities," Punit Misra, marketing manager, HLL was quoted by The Times of India.

Mumbai can draw consolation from the fact that its score is in the nineties, the same league as Delhi and Hyderabad, but then so are Jaipur, Ranchi and Bhopal, which are far less professionally managed.

Hindustan Lever Ltd, the company, which commissioned the survey, said the findings vindicate its effort to promote health and hygiene.

take care....
