IIM Kozhikode and Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) Celebrate Integrity and Sincerity by commemorating death anniversary of Manjunath Shanmugam

19th November 2009

Students at IIM Kozhikode in association with Manjunath Shanmugam Trust organised a candle light vigil to commemorate the death of Manjunath Shanmugam, an IIM Lucknow alumnus. Manjunath Shanmugam is a name that no MBA graduate from IIM Lucknow 2001-03 batch is likely to forget. However the relevance of this name and the individual to which it belongs to has to be understood by students all over the country.

An IIM Lucknow (2003 batch) alumnus, Manjunath was a popular student, noted for his passion for music, sincerity and integrity. An Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) employee, he was working to curb malpractices in his territory and was murdered on 19th November 2005 by a petrol pump owner and his accomplices.

Manjunath Shanmugam Trust

The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust was formed on 23rd February 2006, Manjunath’s 28th birth anniversary, by members of international IIM alumni network. MST’s immediate objective was to ensure quick justice in Manjunath Murder case. The broader vision of the trust is to build on the network, skills and resources of the professional corporate community, to help improve governance in Indian public life. The Trust has also instituted Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award to honour and encourage persons or institutions who are working to uphold the values of truth and honesty in Indian corporate, government or public life.

CandleLight March
Students of IIM Kozhikode gathered in huge numbers to attend the vigil in remembrance of the brave individual who gave his life to counter corruption and uphold integrity. The students took an oath of honesty, integrity and commitment to ethical behaviour as responsible citizens of India. Director of IIM Kozhikode, Dr. Debashis Chatterjee, who was then professor at IIM Lucknow and taught Manjunath, shared some of his memories of Manjunath. The address was followed by a minutes’ silence in commemoration of Manjunath.

The vigil is a unique opportunity for the entire student community of India to stir nationwide consciousness and raise their voice against rampant corruption. There has been much discourse on corruption which is still a deep-rooted reality in India. The march is an attempt to find a solution to this problem by instilling a spirit of sincerity and integrity in students. The importance of these values in the current business scenario is being emphasised. The idea is to create an ethical consciousness in students that will deter them from business malpractices. Manjunath Shanmugam trust has taken the initiative and several leading educational institutions of this country including IIM Kozhikode have responded in kind.

Students pledge to fight corruption

November 19, 2009

Ahmedabad

Manjunath Shanmugam was a well known and respected alumnus of IIM Lucknow, batch of 2003. He is described by his friends as an amazing singer whose voice would bring a smile to your face and light up your hearts. His was an unwavering voice that spoke out fearlessly against the oil adulteration practices that he observed in his area, as a Marketing Manager of IOCL in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh. On November 19 2005, the light was blown out and the voice silenced forever when he was brutally murdered, his body riddled by six bullets.

Manjunath’s death shook the world and once again brought the corruption rampant in our society onto the surface. What happened was not something out of place. Several people in PSUs and several other organizations faced menacing threats to prevent them from speaking out against malpractices. But Manjunath, unlike most people, remained unfazed by threats, and did his job honestly.

Manjunath’s death was a wake-up call to the nation, especially the young generation, reminding them of the importance of integrity in each action of theirs. The onus is upon this generation, to set an example of exemplary ethical conduct and to report any unethical practices that they come across so as to take India forward into a corruption-free era.

On 19th November 2009, students and faculty across 25 colleges nationwide came together for candle light prayer meets to commemorate Manjunath’s fourth death anniversary and to take an integrity pledge to remind the nation of what Manjunath died for.

At IIM Ahmedabad, one of the institutions where the candle light prayer meets were held, students of all years and from different programmes came together and observed silence to pay respect to Manjunath and to pledge to fight corruption in every form.

As Prof. Abraham Koshy, PGP Chairperson of IIMA said, “If we want to move from being one of the most corrupt countries to a corruption-free one, the onus for the move will lie on the youth of the nation. They need to raise their voices against corrupt practices and strive hard to make a change. The youth need to sow the seeds of integrity right in the beginning to ensure a corruption-free development.”

Manjunath Shanmugam Trust

To ensure that Manjunath was delivered quick justice and that his killers were appropriately punished, the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) was formed on 23 February 2006, Manjunath’s 28th birth anniversary, by members of the international IIM alumni network. The broader vision of the trust is to build on the network, skills and resources of the professional corporate community, to help improve governance in Indian public life. MST has a small, focused group of Trustees and Advisory Board members drawn from corporate India. Volunteers are spread across the U.S, UK, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and India. The Trust has instituted the Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award to honor and encourage person/s or institutions who are working to uphold the values of truth and honesty in Indian corporate, government or public life.

MST also set up India’s first national RTI Act helpline in association with noted NGO Parivartan on Nov 19th 2006, to mark Manjunath's first death anniversary. This was discontinued after a year to opt for a more decentralised approach, by funding local initiatives across the country.

Zee business opened a Pandora's box when they gave out the results for the Best Bschool Rankings in India 2009

IIM Ahmadabad topped the charts when it came to overall ranking, course content, infrastructure, industry interface and placements.

IIPM on the other hand has topped on the global exposure front. If going on an industrial visit to europe, enjoying madam Tussuad's museum is the most important criteria for global exposure than maybe yes they are right. We'd definately like to know WHAT PARAMETERS were taken into account when considering global exposure.

Another surprise is that IIPM is ahead of ISB, SP JAIN, JBIMS on many fronts.

So if you have a lot of spare time on your hands and are looking from something hillarious, head on to Zee Biz best B-School survey results: IIM-A at top, IIPM moves up

Like last year, the top rankers in Industry interface and Placement have been the three IIMs - A, B and C - in that order. However, IIM - Calcutta improved its infrastructure and pushed back IIM - Bangalore this year. In Global exposure IIPM and FMS - Delhi ruled again this year. Second and third ranking IIM - Ahmedabad and Bangalore exchanged places.

MATRIX INFOSYS (PTU, Kolkata) - A Big FRAUD

Students’ community of West Bengal must be careful of the fraudulent company Matrix Infosys, offering various academic courses under the banner of Punjab Technical University (PTU).

This company publishes advertisements in various newspapers asking academic institutions to affiliate with them. Most of the academic institutions affiliated to MATRIX INFOSYS (PTU, Kolkata) have very poor infrastructure. This company is only here to make some quick bucks exploiting innocent students of West Bengal.

Answer scripts are not checked properly. For eg in the March 2009 MBA semester 1 exam, 80% of the students failed in the Quantitative Methods paper. Now, how 80% of the students can fail in a single paper.

Actually Answer scripts are not evaluated properly by this Matrix Infosys. It may also happen that this Matrix Infosys wants to earn some extra money out of the students, by compelling them to review their answer scripts after payment of Rs 1000/- per paper. But unfortunately for students result of the review is not declared even after waiting for over one year.

Very often it happens that in spite of appearing in an exam and signing in the attendance sheet, students find that they have been marked absent in one or more paper in their Marksheet! This must be a ploy to this cheat company MATRIX INFOSYS (PTU, Kolkata) to earn Rs 500/- per paper & per student as Reappear charges.

Students receive their marksheet, over 1 year after appearing in their semester exams!!!
Approaching the officials of MATRIX INFOSYS (PTU, Kolkata) at Salt Lake, Kolkata are of no use. They hardly listen to the students complains, let alone addressing them. Regional Head Gautam Banerjee, along with Gugnani brothers(Ajesh & Sanjib) even comments that PTU is only here to make business(and cheat students).

Students should never take admission in any academic institution affiliated to this fraudulent company Matrix Infosys conducting various academic courses under the banner of Punjab Technical University (PTU).

One Ms. Papiya Basu often calls up students and entice them to join various courses under PTU. Never receive calls from 9331721115/32419228/9332025153

Karuna Jain is the first woman to head a B-school in India. Head of the Shailesh J Mehta School of Management at IIT-Bombay, she is excited about the growing number of women at the helm of banks and financial institutions.

"It is so good to see women establish themselves. When I took over, there were many who were sceptical about how I would handle things. But I am glad I proved them wrong," says an optimistic Karuna Jain.

"Women by nature are careful, meticulous and well prepared. This is what helps women to rise high in financial services as due diligence is vital in financial services," says Jain.

India is competitive in terms of imparting quality education, she believes. "Our primary and higher secondary education is far superior, our IQ level is very high too. Our average student outperforms the brilliant American," she claims.

She questions the rationale of creating new IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) when they are already faced with a faculty and fund shortage. The biggest challenge she faces is getting good faculty. She points out that nobody wants to take up the teaching profession.

"Students in the B-school earn three times more than me on the first day. What I earn in a year, they earn in a month," she says.

Karuna Jain shares her views on management education, faculty shortage, the challenges she faces, and the exciting experience of over two decades of teaching and mentoring students.

How does it feel to be head of a management institute?

It feels very good to be in such a position though there are several challenges. It has been an interesting journey and I have been quite successful despite all odds. I don't look at myself as a woman, but women have to work really hard to prove themselves.

There have been times when people have tried to pull me down, but that has not affected me. They have tried to tell me, 'Don't think you can get away because you a lady', and I have told them, 'I am not a lady, I am your boss!' You have to be really strong. I have always been strong.

In terms of the achievements by the institute, the number of job offers, salary scales and research work have improved after I took over so I am quite satisfied.

The faculty strength has doubled in two years. But I have to increase it by 30 per cent in a year's time.
