Ahvan, the annual management summit of IIM Indore, which will be held from 19th to 21st November, started today at the IIM Indore campus. With people pouring in from campuses across the country, the campus was bustling with activity throughout the day. Shashank Jha, the coordinator of Ahvan welcomed the guests and briefly outlined the concept and itinerary of the event. The event was inaugurated by Prof. N Ravichandran and Mr. V. Shankar, CEO and MD of Rallis India. While addressing the students, Prof. Ravichandran expressed his happiness about the commencement of the 3 day long festival. He said that Ahvan will give the students an opportunity for an overall personality development as it teaches them the art of management. He reinforced his dream to see one of his students inaugurating this event some years down the line.

This was followed by the first lecture of Envision series of lectures, “Wealth Creation- the Rallis experience” by Mr. V. Shankar where he talked about the rebuilding of the brand Rallis after the company registered historic losses. He told that Rallis was able to recuperate from the downfall by identifying the core reasons for the losses and answering each of those in a focused manner. He stressed upon the need of product portfolio enhancement, strengthening customer relationships and investment in brand building for building up the market position of a company. He also talked about the journey from turnaround of the company to its consolidation by embarking on the growth agenda. The need for efficient technology, proper market research and communication were highlighted through various examples in the talk such as the project Goal which emphasizes on achievement of individual goals to build up the company’s vision.

Day one of Ahvan continued with the same fervor it started off with. The inauguration ceremony was followed by the kicking off of Gordian’s Knot, Kalpavriksha, Ashwamedha. The event started with the usual round of photos and an ice-breaking session. In the latter, many hailed Ashwamedha as a though-leadership initiative, which is a need in today’s B-schools. Others defined it as a “podium to identify future leaders”, with one participant going to the extent of saying that “Ashwa is akin to alchemy”. Dr. Vijay Menon, Organisational Design Consultant at IAS Mussoorie, one of the judges for the event, beautifully captured the essence of a true manager, defining it as a person who has the “simplicity of conception coupled with originality of expression”.

The first round of the event was a quiz, but with a difference. The concept of the quiz was: “The wrong answer is the right answer” – the group was divided into five teams, and questions were posed to them, to which they had to give the wrong answer. The quiz was more of a test of team skills than intelligence, as the quizmaster, Dr. Vijay Menon, mesmerized everyone present with his depth of knowledge on topics as diverse as World Wars and Bhagwat Gita. In the words of one of the contestants, Karthik R, one had to just “trust his instincts” more than anything else to conquer the quiz. The quiz turned out to be a close affair as the margin of victory was very slim.

The second round was a rapid chess round, where the participants became the warriors, with each member having to satisfy a personal agenda, as well as a team goal. The game was a test of intellect as well as team-building skills, as each and every move was debated among the participants.

The third round divided the group into teams yet again, and gave them a commodity to prepare a marketing plan around. The concept was: “It’s easy to create a marketing plan around gizmos, how about creating a plan around objects as simple as a broom!”. Teams were given objects like shoe-lace, broom and rope. The round involved giving a presentation to a panel of judges consisting of Prof. Ashish Sadh and Prof. Sabita Mahapatra, of IIM Indore, who keenly analyzed each presentation. The presentation also involved a commercial, which brought out the creative talent inside the participants.

Simultaneously, a workshop on online marketing by Google Adworks was a huge crowd puller. The workshop started with an address by Mr. Siddhartha Tiwari, a Product Specialist from Google talked about the changes that have happened in the world of marketing, how consumer demands have changed and how the companies have reacted to this change.

Mr. Arjun Narayan from Product Specialist team told about the consumer trends, the emergence and evolution of social networking and how the companies are leveraging these trends. Ms. Seva, from the sales and marketing team involved the audience in a very interesting session where she called upon a student to help her in demonstrating the working of Google Adwords, from the process of registering to finally putting up a company’s advertisements on the internet. This, undoubtedly was an enriching learning experience for all the participants who attended the workshop.

At the same time, the first round of Chain Reaction, the supply chain game, kicked off with very tough participation from all the teams. The first round being concluded, IMT Ghaziabad was leading the boards but everything could change tomorrow when the final round finishes.

Several events are still lined up throughout the night which will keep the hosts and guests at IIM Indore busy and enthralled through the night. The big event of the night being the Grand Finale of Gordian’s Knot whence the “Best Team” would walk away with the crown. A lot of exciting events are planned for day two of Ahvan 2009 with the highlight event, “Spotlight” of Ashwamedha.
Sood, MD, WESCO & NESCO, and Director, SOUTHCO, and Mr Pawan Agarwal, XIMB Alumnus and Director for Corporate and Government Ratings, CRISIL. The discussion was moderated by XIMB’s very own Prof. D.V. Ramana, who is also Academic Advisor for SPJCM, Singapore & Dubai and Director, Bhubaneswar Stock Exchange. The special guest for the evening was Mr Sunil Sastry, Principal Consultant with PA Consulting Group, Bangalore.
Ms Rashmi Bansal, who is an IIM-A alumnus, started things off by illustrating how, even in diversity, we are all united in dreams and goals in life, and seek to isolate ourselves from the diversity, and how each person should break out his or her own individual diversity and bring his potential to the fore to make a difference to the country.

Mr V.K. Sood stressed on one’s commitment to work and loyalty to his or her organization, as opposed to the norm of loyalty to oneself. He said that if each one of us is focussed towards our country’s objectives and combine it with performance and hard work, there is nothing that can stop our country from progressing and reaching its goals.

Mr Sandeep Pandey’s take on the negatives of diversity in politics, religion and local sentiments was interesting, but he also pointed out the fact that ours had been and still is a successful democracy in all except two years of its independence. According to him, we cannot truly progress unless diversity in the economy on the scale that we have in our country is reduced drastically by concentrating on primary production and agriculture instead of services.

Mr B.K. Sabharwal spoke about the diversity in the finance sector and the unexplored opportunities lying there while Mr Pawan Agarwal stressed that economic liberalization combined with the diversity of skills that our population gifts us leads to budding entrepreneurs, who should take the lead in encouraging the people of our country to reverse the recent trend of spending patterns shifting to benefit other countries rather than India itself.
Our special guest, Mr Sastry was invited to the dais to say a few words. He was vocal about us, as a country being holistically strategic, instead of solution oriented, to be innovative in the rural region and for each and every individual to be completely transparent.

The floor was then thrown open to questions from the house and several important issues were brought up and discussed among the panellists, including vote bank politics and the choice of party over candidates.
Dr D.V. Ramana brought the discussion to a close, citing the XIMB initiative of PSR, Personal Social Responsibility, as definitive actions, rather than CSR, Corporate Social Responsibility, which are generally restricted to thoughts and no more, followed by the vote of thanks. Mementos were presented to each of the speakers and the special guest by Dr. Subhajyoti Roy, Dean Academics.

Over the next three days, XIMB will reverberate with ‘Freedom’, which is the Xpressions ’09 theme. It will bring together participants from colleges of different streams, and corporates too, in a gamut of events ranging from business simulation games to communication development programmes, paper presentations and cultural events ranging from fashion shows to rock nights. Xpressions ’09 culminates with Mohit Chauhan (of Masakali and Tum Se Hi fame) performing live on campus on Sunday evening. Xpressions ’09 is being covered by Channel [V] for their new campus show ‘School of Cool’ and also by Red FM.

IIM Indore Presents Ahvan ’09: All Set To Imagine India

Indian Institute of Management Indore, one of India’s topmost Business schools, will be organizing its annual management summit ahvan ’09, on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of November 2009.

Āhvān ’09 is IIM Indore’s premiere business festival and is one of the most anticipated events among top B School participants across India. The showcase events such as Ashwamedha, Kalpavriksha, and Klueless have seen tremendous participation from top B Schools over the years, attracting some of the best minds in the field of business and management. This year, they are expecting to host close to 500 participants from major B schools and Corporate Houses in their campus and another 2000 students and faculty from local institutes. Their theme, inspired by the Nandan Nilekani book of the same name, is “Imagining India” with most events circling around issues that deal with making India globally competent on multiple levels, while at the same time staying locally centric, and, above all, socially relevant.

With Ashwamedha – one of their flagship events receiving over 1200 hits already & 600+ well-informed comments on its blog, the ‘Think’ stage of Ashwamedha can’t be called anything less than successful. The first round ‘Hurdle’ was an aptitude-based round that stressed on out-of-the-box thinking. 70 successful warriors crossed over to ‘Ignite’ where they have chosen to present their ideas on 1 out of the 7 topics like waste management, river pollution etc. Allowing readers to comment on the presentation uploaded on the ’Ignite’ blog has received huge support & enthusiasm. The ‘Act’ and the ‘Lead’ stages will kick off tonight with the announcement of the final 30 contenders, hailing from B-schools like IIM – K, A, L, I; MDI, FMS, XLRI, IIFT. The final winner shall take home Rs.1,50,000 along with the trophy.

Another flagship event of Ahvan 2009 will be Kalpavriksha- the social Business plan competition which is all set for its final presentation round on 20th November. The final 5 teams are from IIM A, IIM K, IIM Shillong, FMS and SIIB. These teams are currently in the mentorship phase where their plans are being looked into by a team from Ashoka Fellows and FINO. The final round will be judged by a panel of an academician, a venture capitalist and a field expert in the area. Kalpavriksha, with an international tie-up with Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) of Foster School of Business and association with FINO as ‘Knowledge Partner’ and Cognizant as Sponsor, promises to be bigger and better than last year.

Gordian Knot is another such event where management students would get down from their ivory towers and be tested on their faculties to make the best use of any situation. A thoroughly challenging event, it has received participation from more than 200 teams across colleges like IIMs, IITs, MDI, IMT, IMI, NMIMS, SPJAIN, IIFT and FMS. The first round ‘Cognitive Knot’ consisted of online puzzles, from where 30 teams that were shortlisted had to make a video introducing themselves in the Creative Knot. The 6 final teams from IIM Kozhikode, MICA, IIFT-Delhi, IIM Indore, SP Jain and MDI shall now battle it out in the city of Indore for the prize money of more than Rs. 50,000.

Klueless – the online game which in its 5th year now, reached a new high with a million hits in the first 2 days itself. People from US, UK, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and even Romania have racked their brains to crack this puzzle. The Hall Of Fame has a couple from UIUC Chicago, a Lt General from the Army, a dentist from Nagpur, a Purdue University student and many such others listed on it. Its popularity can be gauged by the fact that the organizers of the event having received a number of requests to make it more frequent than the current annual format. Certainly, K5, it is popularly known has taken us all by storm.

And for the grand finale on 21st November, there would be a live stage performance with Neeraj Shridhar of the Bombay Vikings fame gracing the LiveWire stage. Since 2005, Neeraj has been singing playback for bollywood films and has delivered hits like Bhool Bhulaiya (Bhool Bhulaiya), Love Mera Hit Hit (Billu Barber), Heyy Babyy (Heyy Babyy), Twist (Love Aaj Kal) and most recently Prem Ki Naiyya ( Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani), thus making Neeraj the flavor of the season. It surely promises to be an evening packed with energy and electricity. The promotions have already started and there are many road shows planned at various locations around the city of Indore. There shall also be many exciting contests from winning a free ticket for the concert to a dinner with the artiste himself.

Along with all the competitions, they would also be organizing various guest talks throughout the 3 days under the “Envision” series, where some of the well known personalities would be delivering lectures on the diverse fields of business. Some of the eminent names include Mr. V. Shankar, MD & CEO, Rallis India Limited; Prof. G. Mohan Gopal, Director, National Judiciary Academy, Bhopal; Mr. N. Gopalaswami, Former Chief Election Commissioner; K. Raghavendra Rao, MD, Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd amongst others. The co-sponsors for this ahvan ‘09 are State Bank of India, ONGC & SAIL; with GATI, Safexpress & Indian Oil Servo being the Associate Sponsors. Sahara Samay MP are the TV Media Partner while BIG 92.7FM would be the event’s radio partner.

Two Truly Global Personalities visit IIM Indore

Mr. Sam Pitroda and Mr. Gurcharan Das

Saturday, 7th November 2009:

One evening, two great personalities and a spell-bound audience - that pretty much explains the atmosphere during the 2 guest talks at IIM Indore on Saturday evening.

Mr. Sam Pitroda, CEO, World-Tel Ltd., known by many as the man behind the telecom revolution in India spoke to the gathering about his journey through life and how he redefined himself at various points of time. Born into a Gujarati family settled in Orissa in 1942, Sam’s life is extraordinary to say the least. From Orissa to Gujarat to Chicago to Delhi, his life is an epitome of experiment, risk and dedication. A very energetic individual, Mr. Pitroda, spoke of the days when some of his life’s biggest choices revolved around his decision and commitment to marry the girl of his life.

Pitroda completed his Masters in Electrical Engg. from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago and soon after founded Wescom Switching which was later sold to Rockwell International, where Sam was appointed VP. He explained how in 1980 a chance visit to Delhi prompted him to “fix” the Indian Telecom scenario. In 1984, armed with the support of the Indian Government, Sam set out to transform Indian Telecommunication. Working out of a Hotel in Delhi, he and his team were able to make significant achievements in a short span of 3 years. It was during this period that he shifted back to India with his wife. However soon after, the electoral loss of Rajiv Gandhi and subsequent politics forced Pitroda to go back to the US for a short span where he rebuilt his life.

On returning to India, Sam became an active member of The Knowledge Commission. He emphasized on the importance of Education for India and the need to invest in it heavily. Sam spoke at length about the changes which technology has brought about to the world and how it shall continue to do the same in the future. He also reiterated the necessity for the creation of a new model of Economic Development, to sustain the growing aspirations of the world’s population. On being questioned on the future of Communication in India, Mr. Pitroda said, “I believe Voice will be free in the future. The true future of Communication lies in Data and Applications.”

Mr. Gurcharan Das, Author, Columnist for TOI and ex-CEO, P&G, spoke to the audience about his recent book release – “The Difficulty of Being Good” (2009). He opened the talk by stating 2 qualities always seen in great managers – Determination & Humility. He explained that humility is required to be able to work for a company and not for personal reward and also to be able to work in a team. Das also pointed out that there is a thin line between self interest and selfishness. According to him, India has been able to grow at the 2nd fastest pace worldwide despite it’s government which was morally flawed in various ways. It was after completing his book - “India Unbound” that he became highly depressed and turned to the Mahabharata which he felt contained the essence of “moral reasoning”

“The Difficulty of Being Good” speaks about a person’s search for Dharma – a word which has varying meanings to different individuals. Das took instances from the Mahabharata and explained the reason to be good. He spoke about status anxiety – “All of us want to be somebody. Our own self-esteem is held hostage by others.” He also spoke about the most destructive element of envy – “If my neighbor succeeds, I’ll decline.”

The talk was truly enlightening and left the audience wanting for more. But as the saying goes, all good things have to come to an end, so did the talk. Everyone was delighted after the sessions and the toping on the cake was the book signing session by Mr. Gurcharan Das where students grabbed the opportunity to get the book signed by the great author himself!

Post Release

Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management organized a Marketing Conference on November 06, 2009 on “Creating Sustainable Advantage: Indian Service Sector”. With the help of this Conference, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management aimed to provide a forum to experts from the corporate, academia, and government to share their expert opinion and insights on the creation of sustainable advantage in the Indian service sector.

The session was inaugurated with a film on the life and times of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. The chief guest for the occasion was Mr. Kamalji Sahay, CEO, Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd.. He, along with Shri Anil Shastri, former Union Minister and Chairman, Board of Governors, LBSIM, Delhi, Dr. K.C. Mishra, Director, LBSIM, Dr. G.L. Sharma Corporate Advisor & Convener, LBSIM, Delhi and Mr. Vikas Verma President, Management Grid LBSIM, inaugurated the conference by lighting the lamp and by offering floral tributes to Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr. K.C. Mishra, the Director of the Institute, welcomed the chief guest, speakers, delegates, media persons, faculty and the students to the Marketing Conference. He stressed on the significance of a people-oriented approach to marketing, particularly in the service sector and stated that marketing is the most volatile realm of knowledge wherein any field can remain a differentiator but ephemerally.

Mr. S. K. Jain, Conference Convener, LBSIM, Delhi, delved into the contemporary relevance of the service sector, the life blood of Indian industry. He touched upon the three pillars, namely innovation, excellence and sustainability, of this currently ubiquitous sector and its ever-diversifying paraphernalia. He stated categorically that there was a compelling need to expand the focus from customer satisfaction to customer delight and a futuristic ecstasy in the context of service industry.

In the inaugural address, Mr. Kamalji Sahay, CEO, Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd., at the outset, thanked the institute for the invitation and reposed faith and hope in the youth for taking forward self-respect and dignity of the nation, marketed first by Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastriji, our second Prime Minister. With the advent of the era of liberalization, he remarked, the limelight, which was earlier on the agricultural and manufacturing sector, has now shifted to services. India’s gargantuan population, which was put down as a liability, has been instrumental in triggering off the much talked about rapid growth of Indian economy.
