Hi...

These are some points for Bill of Lading (BoL)
--------

The Bill of Lading is basically a receipt issued by a carrier with whom the consignment has been booked for the delivery to the desired named destination. It is similar to the Goods Receipt (Lorry Receipt or LR or Biliti, as called in vernacular language) issued by domestic Carriers / Transporters for in-country shipment, whereas the document Bill of Lading is issued for sending the consignment to foreign countries (for import / export). The Bill of Lading meets many important composite requirements including operation instructions, legal scopes etc. and stands valid in Court of Law. These are following:

1. A legal receipt for consignment.
2. It is legal contract for shipment of consignment.
3. It carries series of instructions which serve as guide to the operations staff, like how to handle, what precautions are to be taken while handling etc.
4. It carries the details of consignment, including name of items it is carrying, volume, weight, value etc.
5. In many instances, the freight is also mentioned.

A further extension is Ocean Bill of Lading and Air Waybills.

The Ocean Bill of Lading is issued when the movement of consignment is through sea (water) and may be issued in either a STRAIGHT form or an ORDER form. The difference is significant especially in case of any legal dispute. When STRAIGHT form is used the name of the consignee must be given in the bill. Whereas when ORDER form is used either the name of consignee or the name designee can be mentioned.

The Air Waybills are issued when the movement of consignment is through Air and document is non-negotiable and for direct delivery only.
