Government Policies In India

Many efforts are taken to secure greater participation of woman in business, industry & other industrial activities. The plan document has suggested the following:

To treat women as specific target group in all development programme.

To properly diversify vocational training facilities for women to suit their
varied needs and skills.

To encourage appropriate technologies, equipments & practice for reducing their drudgery & increasing their efficiency & productivity.

The new industrial policy of the Government of India has stressed the need for conducting special entrepreneurship programmes for women with a view to develop women entrepreneurship. The policy has recommended that product & process oriented courses may be conducted to enable women to start small scale industries.

Policies concerning Indian women formulated by government are in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of India. The constitution guarantees certain fundamentals rights besides freedom of speech, protection of life, liberty & prohibition of discrimination or denial of protection, etc. Indian women enjoy these rights in the same manner as Indian men.

For instance, Article 14 of the constitution provides ‘equality before law’ & Article 15 ‘prohibits any discrimination’.

There is only one specific provision in Article 15(3), which empowers the state to make ‘any specific provision for women & children’. This provision enabled the state to make special provision for women, particularly in the field of labour legislation like the Factories Act, the Mines Act & so forth.
