Food storage and distribution systems

The typical storage and distribution system for movement of perishable food from manufacturer to consumption was detailed by Wells and Singh (1992).

The perishable distribution chain encompasses the movement of food from manufacturer (the point of processing of food such that the item is suitable from retail purchases) to consumer (a retail outlets where product are delivered to final consumer ).

Little control can be exerted by processors and suppliers over the destiny of perishable food beyond the retail outlet other than point of purchase and other information and other consumer education measures.

Since perishable food inventories are destined for retail consumption, a quality based-management strategy must be oriented to deliver the highest, most consistent quality product possible.
