Advantages and Disadvantages of Assembling

Advantages:

The importance of assembling can be explained with the help of following points:

• Wider Market : Assembling helps in widening the market. Due to assembling, goods can be sold only in bulk. If assembling is not done, the goods can be sold only in local market.

• Price Stability : Price of goods remain stable when there is proper balance between demand and supply. Due to assembling, of goods in the warehouse the supply can be made as per the demand.


• Regular Supply Of Seasonal Goods : Production of certain goods is
seasonal but consumption of those goods is throughout the year. Due to
assembling even seasonal goods can be supplied regularly throughout the year.

• Financial Help : in case of need the seller can get loan from the bank against the security of assembled goods.

• Economy in Storing and Transportation : Assembling reduces the cost of storing, transportation, and handling charges. The benefit of reduced cost is made available to primary producers.

• Helps Standardization and Grading : When goods are graded according to their standard the seller can charge higher price for better quality goods and thereby can increase his profit. Such important function of standardization can be done only after assembling of goods.

• Assembly using relatively less skilled labor.

• Much lower cost in mass production.

• Assembly line production produces consistent results. Each step is performed exactly the same way, many times over.

• Semi finished certifications are reduced to a minimum, thus temporary storage facilities can be avoided to a large extent. Also the consistent arrangement of the jobs saves area, in addition routes of transportation are shortened, reduced transport costs

• Costing ,It is advantageous by division of labor and specialization by the low qualification requirements of the workers can be reduced manufacturing wages.

• Low turn-around times make a decrease for the total production time possible.

• An examination of the products can be integrated into the processing step



Disadvantages:

• Large capital requirement is to be fulfilled.

• Long time to get set up.

• Not suited to custom parts or frequent design changes.

• If a quality issue is discovered late in the manufacturing process, much time and material may be lost.

• Small flexibility with occupation fluctuations, the adaptability of the enterprise is lowered.

• High susceptibility to interference of entire production with machine or losses of working hours.

• High capital requirement, high capital freeze, high plant intensity, high fixed costs.

• Small action clearance of the workers.

• Monotonous work produces alienation, blunting and motivation problems.

Key requirements to be successful in assembling

Designing assembly systems in an efficient way demands an increased focus on production development and a changed way of thinking where production and the potential of production development for profitability are observed. This influences the resources and the priority that the task to develop assembly systems is given.

In order for a company to make sure that a system design project will be successful, it is advantageous to know what factors that are essential. Through the identification of a number of critical factors for a successful system project, the system designers would have the possibility to control their work in a way that would be difficult otherwise. If this occurs in combination with the use of a design tool, the possibility to work in a structured and systematic way increases leading to a higher probability to avoid disturbances when designing. Today, there is a lack of assembly system design methods to facilitate this work.

The aim of the research within the area is to utilise the design process as a tool to create productive assembly systems in parallel with the product development. Succeeding with a system design project means to create an assembly system in a time and cost effective way, which suits the company and situation's specific requirements.

A successful design project also implies that implementation problems and production disturbances in the assembly system become minimal. To achieve this, knowledge of what produces a successful assembly design project is required.

The aim of this project is to identify and concretise factors that are important to design an assembly system.

The expected result will be a simple and easy-to-use tool containing a number of critical key factors. Such a tool will be used as support for both management and system designers in order to make clear the prerequisites for the system design. The tool should be used with benefit in combination with a previously developed design method.

Through theoretical studies and on-going studies in companies which have recently designed assembly systems, a number of key factors have been identified. The next step is their evaluation from different result criteria, regarding both the design process and the assembly system, as well as time and costs for the development of the project, running-in problems, needs for change, production disturbances and different types of flexibility (capacity-, utilisation-, product-flexibility).

The evaluation of the factors from the exemplified result criteria will indicate the importance of the key factors for a successful design project, i.e. how critical each key factor is in different situations, for different companies, etc.
