One of the most well-known and respected industrialists in India, Ratan Tata, is the Chairman of the Tata Group.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:
Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, he suffered as a child because his parents separated when he was very young. He was brought up by his grandmother Lady Navajbai.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay. He did his schooling in Mumbai. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Cornell University in 1962. He had a short stint with Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles, California, before returning to India in late 1962. He joined the Tata Group and was assigned to various companies before being appointed director-in-charge of The National Radio & Electronics Company (NELCO) in 1971.

Ratan Tata was appointed Chairman of Tata Industries in 1981. He was assigned the task of transforming the company into a Group strategy think-tank, and a promoter of new ventures in high technology businesses. He was sent to Jamshedpur to work at Tata Steel. He was appointed the Director-in-Charge of The National Radio & Electronics Company Limited (Nelco) in 1971 and was successful in turning Nelco around.

THE STORY SO FAR…
In 1981, he became the Chairman of Tata Industries and was instrumental in ushering in a wide array of reforms. It was under his stewardship that Tata Consultancy Services went public and Tata Motors was listed in the New York Stock Exchange.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in January 2000. He serves on the boards of several leading organizations, both in the public as well as the private sector in India. He is a member of the International Investment Council set up by the President of South Africa and serves on the programme board of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's India AIDS initiative.
Ratan Tata is presently the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. He is also the Chairman of the major Tata companies such as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Tea, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices. He has taken Tata Group to new heights and under his leadership Group's revenues have grown manifold.

In 1991, Ratan Tata took over the Chairmanship from JRD Tata. Under him Tata Consultancy Services went public and Tata Motors was listed in the New York Stock Exchange. In 1998, Tata Motors came up with Tata Indica, the first truly Indian car. The car was the brainchild of Ratan Tata.

He is credited with leading the Tatas' successful bid for Corus- an Anglo-Dutch steel and aluminum producer, which was acquired by Tata Sons for an estimated £6.7 billion in January 2007.

Ratan Tata was honored with Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian awards in 2000. He was also conferred an honorary doctorate in business administration by Ohio State University, an honorary doctorate in technology by the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and an honorary doctorate in science by the University of Warwick.

Ratan Tata, on Thursday, 10th January delivered on the promise he made four years ago with the launch of the “people’s car”, even if buyers will have to fork out a little more than the much-talked about Rs 1 lakh price tag for the basic model.

They will have to pay an additional 12.5 per cent value added tax, transportation cost and an insurance charge. But that will still be about half the cheapest car in today’s market, the 25-year old model from rival Maruti Suzuki.

Mr Ratan Tata is my career idol...I hail from Jamshedpur...the land of the tatas...nd the tatas have done a lot for our city...and its time he takes a hiatus...and divests his responsibilities!!
