Gentiva Health Services (NASDAQ: GTIV), formerly based in Melville, Long Island, New York and now in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the largest providers of home health care and related services in the United States.
Gentiva is a Fortune 1000 company with approximately $1.1 billion in annual revenue. Gentiva is also a member of the S&P 600 index, developed by Standard & Poor's, featuring small capitalization U.S.-based stocks.
The company offers a range of services, including nursing, physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy, cardiac and pulmonary care, disease and pain management, and other health and medical services.[1]
Gentiva provides health services to over half a million patients annually[2] through over 380 U.S. locations in 39 states.[3] According to Morningstar, "Gentiva is a gentle giant...the nation's largest home health care services firm."[4]
Gentiva companies include Donelson, Emerald Coast, Gilbert's, Healthfield Group, Heritage, Horizon, Hospice of Charleston, Lazarus House, Tar Heel, Total Care and Wiregrass.[5]
In 2002, Gentiva sold its specialty pharmaceutical services division, which administered infusion and injectable pharmaceuticals to patients with both acute and chronic disease, to Accredo Health Inc. for $415 million in cash and stock.[6] Accredo, in turn, was acquired by Medco (NYSE:MHS), a former division of Merck & Co., for $2.2 billion in February 2005.[7]
In 2006, Gentiva acquired the Atlanta, Georgia-based Healthfield Group, a U.S. provider of home care and pharmaceutical services, for $454 million in cash and stock.[8] In 2008, Gentiva sold a majority stake of its benefit management business, CareCentrix, to Water Street Healthcare Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm.[9]
On May 24, 2010, Gentiva announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase Odyssey Healthcare, a Dallas-based national provider of hospice services, for $1.1 billion in cash. The acquisition is expected to increase Gentiva's revenue to approximately $1.8 billion annually.

Gentiva Health Services, Inc. (Gentiva), incorporated on August 6, 1999, provides home health services throughout the United States. Gentiva is a producer of hospice services in the southeast United States. The Company operations include Home Health segment and Hospice segment. On June 20, 2009, it acquired Mid-State Home Health Agency. On July 1, 2009, it acquired Nicholas County Home Health Agency. On August 22, 2009, it acquired Magna Home Health. On October 16, 2009, it acquired Coordinated Home Health. On December 11, 2009, it acquired AIM Home Care. In February 2010, the Company consummated the sale of its respiratory therapy and home medical equipment and infusion therapy businesses (HME and IV) to a subsidiary of Lincare Holdings, Inc. In May 2010, the Company acquired United Home Care Group, a Medicare-certified home health services business. In August 2010, it acquired Odyssey HealthCare, Inc.
Home Health
The Home Health segment comprises direct home nursing and therapy services operations, including the specialty programs, its Rehab Without Walls unit, and its consulting business. As of January 3, 2010, its Home Health segment conducted its business through approximately 300 locations. The Company conducts direct home nursing and therapy services operations through licensed and Medicare-certified agencies located in 39 states, from which the Company provides various combinations of skilled nursing and therapy services, paraprofessional nursing services, and homemaker services to adult and elderly patients. Reimbursement sources include government programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, and private sources, such as health insurance plans, managed care organizations, long-term care insurance plans and personal funds.
Gentiva’s direct home nursing and therapy services operations also deliver services to its customers through focused specialty programs, including Gentiva Orthopedics, Gentiva Safe Strides, Gentiva Cardiopulmonary, Gentiva Neurorehabilitation and Gentiva Senior Health. Through its Rehab Without Walls unit, the Company also provides home and community-based neurorehabilitation therapies for patients with traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accident injury and acquired brain injury, as well as a number of other complex rehabilitation cases. In addition, the Company provides consulting services to home health agencies, which include operational support, billing and collection activities, and on-site agency support and consulting.
Hospice
Hospice serves terminally ill patients in the southeast United States. Management of the healthcare services and products needed by hospice patients and their families are provided through the use of an interdisciplinary team. Depending on a patient’s needs, each hospice patient is assigned an interdisciplinary team comprised of a physician, nurse(s), home health aide(s), medical social worker(s), chaplain, dietary counselor and bereavement coordinator, as well as other care professionals. Hospice services are provided primarily in the patient’s home or other residence, such as an assisted living residence or nursing home, or in a hospital. The Medicare hospice benefit is designed for patients expected to live six months or less. Hospice services for a patient can continue, however, for more than six months, so long as the patient remains eligible as reflected by a physician’s certification.
