Theatrician invites you to an Absurd Evening

Absurd: The word itself means Senseless, Illogical, Meaningless. So when mad elitist theatrewalas jump, prance, say stupid things and call it “Theatre of the Absurd” the first thing you feel like saying is, ‘Arre yaar! Stop doing all this nautanki and tell us a story! One that we can understand, one which is fun to watch. Wasting our time with all this bakvaas!’

But consider this: Is it possible that Absurd Drama is actually trying to tell us something, something that can only be conveyed through the peculiar style of Absurd Drama itself?
Hijdas who clap loudly, swaying and cursing all over the city: isn’t this nautanki? Politicians whose speeches are composed entirely of badmouthing their rivals instead of telling us what they intend to do about our problems: isn’t this bakvaas? As for meaninglessness, just take a look around you: ‘Horn-ok-Please’ on trucks, Nimbu-mirchi on rickshaws, a sarkari office, need we go on?
Absurd Drama explores the irrational side of human nature. It draws aside the thin curtain of logic, rationality and sense and offers a window to the mysterious and sometimes disturbing landscape of human motives, desires, fears, attractions and prejudices. And it attempts to do so by abandoning the false path of logic and meaning.
That’s all. Honest.

Harold Pinter was one of Britain’s finest Absurd dramatists. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005, and passed away in December 2008. As a tribute to his phenomenal contribution to Literature and Theatre, Kolkata-based theatre group Theatrecians is staging a performance of 2 of his acclaimed plays: The Room and The Dumb Waiter.
ABOUT THE PLAYS
The Room is about the fear of losing the space you live in. The female protagonist of the play has a sordid past, and is constantly plagued by the fear that she will lose her room, or that her husband will disown her because of her past.
The Dumb Waiter used to be a device on which food was served. In this play, two hitmen are waiting for a man named ‘Wilson’ who never turns up. One of the hitmen is afraid that his services will be terminated because he is uncomfortable with taking ‘orders’ to kill people.
Theatrecians is a unique theatre group by young professionals possessed with passion, energy – and the acting bug. It is an open, collaborative space that welcomes any and every individual that wants to be a part of it, and provides talented actors/writers/directors with a platform to express themselves and reach out to a wider audience.
