Hi PPl,

I am back with the best. Today we will look at how VM helps in solving one problem in various ways.

Let us take an example, to multiply 32 * 38

Method 1:

As by mere observation we see that the left hand side digits of the numbers to be multiplied are same (3) and the right hand side digits add up to 10 (2+8). Then we can apply the rule, by one more than the other SUTRA, by which we get the answer as

= 32 * 38
= (3 * 4)/16
= 1216

Method 2:

Since both the numbers to be multiplied are near 30, we can take the base as 30. And the procedure is as follows,

2 8
= 32 * 38
= (32+8)/(8*2)
= 40/16
= (40 * 3)/16 (As the base is 30, LHS is multiplied by 3)
= 120/16
= (120 + 1)/6
= 121/6
= 1216

Method 3:

This is the generalised method called in English as vertically and crosswise SUTRA.

= 32 * 38
= 3 2
3 8
= (3*3)/((3*8)+(3*2))/(2*8)
= 9/(24+6)/16
= 9/30/16
= 9/31/6
= 12/1/6
= 1216

What we have seen here is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more to learn. I have started a new blog for aptitude. The address is Vedic Aptitude.
